🇵🇷 NUEVAYOL 🙏🏽 We’re deeply honored to share that Mataron a Pedro has been officially selected to screen at the New York Latino Film Festival! 🎬🇵🇷 @nylatinofilmfestival

Mataron a Pedro is a short film inspired by the life and enduring legacy of Pedro Albizu Campos. Through memory, history, and powerful performances, the film reflects on colonialism, resistance, and the sacrifices made in the struggle for Puerto Rico’s freedom.

This story is also deeply Nuyorican, our director, Kris Mercado, was born and raised in New York, and this film carries the heartbeat of the diaspora home. We are especially excited to celebrate this moment with our New York family, in the city that has spent decades organizing and fighting for Puerto Rico’s liberation.

This recognition is a testament to everyone who poured their heart into bringing this story to life.

A huge thank you to our incredible cast:
@ismaelcruzcordova @juanaburga

And to our director, Kris Mercado, thank you for your artistry and unwavering commitment to telling this story.

Special thanks to @thisiscalixto & @maria_akay and the entire programming team at the New York Latino Film Festival for believing in this film and giving it a home. We can’t wait to share it with audiences in New York.

To our crew, collaborators, supporters, and everyone who has stood with this project from the beginning… this celebration belongs to you too.

See you in New York! 🇵🇷✨

"If you have a great script, I promise you it becomes like a lighthouse. Everyone can see it, and it'll bring them in. " Director Kristian Mercado's advice to young filmmakers: start with the script. It costs effort, not money.

Scenes from last nights screening of @albizufilm at @angelikafilmdc. 3 sold out screenings, 1 panel, and hundreds of community members coming together to continue building the movement.

Experiencing a piece of art is one of life’s greatest joys and it’s incredibly important to express the independence movement through that.

NEW YORK CITY 🇵🇷🎬 @elmuseo @albizufilm

MATARON A PEDRO is coming to El Museo del Barrio.

MATARON A PEDRO tells the story of Pedro Albizu Campos. It is a story about Puerto Rico, colonialism, resistance, memory, and what happens when a people insist on telling their own history.

And New York is deeply connected to that history. Boricuas here have organized, created, protested, built institutions, and carried Puerto Rico with them for generations.

So to gather at El Museo del Barrio, in the heart of El Barrio, and experience this film together feels incredibly meaningful. 🇵🇷

Okay, so this happened: I’m officially a 2026 Film Independent Episodic Lab Fellow!!!

Huge love to @filmindependent for making real room for stories like mine.

Puerto Ricans have been holding television down forever.
Freddie Prinze Sr. owned primetime in 1974. Rita Moreno was collecting trophies before EGOT was even a word. Sonia Manzano helped raise generations from a Sesame Street stoop. Jimmy Smits brought us into courtrooms, precincts, and the halls of power. Luis Guzmán has been in everything good ever made.
Justina Machado. Marcel Ruiz. Wilson Cruz. Luna Lauren Velez. Josh Segarra. Ismael Cruz Córdova. Captains, detectives, elves, heroes, villains, mothers, fathers, and entire families.

The door was barely cracked, and they ran through it anyway. Then they kept running.

I want to keep running with them. Never stopping. Making the opening wider for whoever is coming next. 🇵🇷

I came into this lab wanting to tell a hip hop and reggaetón story from a truly authentic place. A story about ambition, survival, music, culture, ego, family, and what it costs to stay relevant in an industry that is always looking for the next thing. It comes from a deeply personal space and I’m glad people can feel and see that.

Labs like this are how the next wave gets in. I’m beyond honored to be part of the Film Independent family and surrounded by a seriously stacked class of storytellers.

Congratulations to my fellow Fellows. Grateful to be among you.

The plan is simple: leave this industry better than we found it and tell the best stories we still haven’t seen.
This is one step in that direction.
Pa’lante. 🇵🇷

Ultimately, important stories find their way to the public.
Three sold-out screenings of Mataron a Pedro at @angelikafilmdc in @unionmarketdc. After a grassroots run across Puerto Rico and the U.S., with packed festivals and pop-ups, it is clear how hungry our community is to see Puerto Rican stories and history on screen.

Pedro Albizu Campos’s story, about workers’ rights, civil liberties, and the meaning of freedom, remains urgent. I hope this film stands as a living document of his legacy.

Thank you to the Jerome Foundation, @latinopublicbroadcasting, @centropr, @seedandspark, @budpuertorico, @ismaelcruzcordova, @juanaburga, @davidkoechner, and every producer, cast member, crew member, and supporter who put love into this film. Three sold-out shows, holy shit. What an honor.

Thank you for supporting independent cinema in its purest form. DC, come say hi after the screenings. 🇵🇷 by @krismerc
