And if a tree grows upwards, we owe it all to them (2024)

Clay sculptures rose from little mountains of soil, baby mango trees took root (before the baby goats ate them), and colorful paintings reflected the children’s choices.

This exhibition was created by the children of Nanton, David Neindow @neindow_dave , and me (Kris Russo)—made possible through the generosity of Ibrahim Mahama @ibrahimmahama3 and the entire Red Clay community.

I post-titled our collaborative exhibition “And if a tree grows upwards, we owe it all to them”—lyrics from the song “Demb” by Youssou Ndour—to honor the multitude of beings that participated in the creative sessions this August at Red Clay: human, non-human, plant, animal, and spirit—past, present, and future.

“What I do commit to for this lifetime and as many as I get, is to learn with you always. To study the changes you bring to my body, my spirit, my mind. To be in school with you for the duration, in a curriculum called ‘how we endure.’ I do commit to rigorously learning how to gracefully collaborate, and step back when it’s your turn with nothing prove.” — Alexis Pauline Gumbs @alexispauline

early morning aug. 2024 @redclay_studio setting up for a creative session, these artists came early and wanted to help me… grace like that

I must express

The vision, the loss
The pain, the loss
The gain, the loss
The light

I wanna be free of shame
That calls old names
And holds me through the night

I wanna life that grows upwards
Spent out in the sun

I wanna life I would die for
To smile till it comes
