You have known me as Her Name Is MudBut I am in an era of becoming…I am ready to be called by my name. I feel what I am. I am making space for what will be. I am asking my handsto know the things they hold… and it is more than mud. This change is coming without flourish, fanfare, or branding. This change is coming with obstinate nostalgia and encompassing gratitude for all that I have been. This change is coming after a season spent gently realizing some of my most meaningful work is done outside of the studio and without clay’s influence. I have learned that the moon will keep rising and that I will keep changing, no feeling is final. Rest and then rise. May this make space for all the ways I create to flow freely from me. A simple studio secret 🤎If you’ve ever wondered how to get those soft, rounded edges on clay cutouts this is one of my favorite little tricks that is genuinely so easy (and satisfying to do) Lay a piece of thin plastic over your slab before using your metal cutter gives your pieces a softer, more organic edge while keeping your cutter cleaner too. It’s a tiny detail, but details like this are part of what gives handmade work such thoughtful craftsmanship.A few tips:• The thinner the plastic, the better. If it’s too thick, your cutter won’t make it all the way through to your work board, leaving an incomplete and kind of scraggly cut.• Thick plastic can also leave unwanted impressions instead of creating that soft edge. (Think the texture of a Mylar balloon.)When I can I reuse the thin plastic bags that come wrapped around glaze materials, raw ingredients, or shipping supplies. I use the same piece over and over until it starts leaving marks. Then it gets one last job covering my pottery while it dries. Nothing fancy, just making the most of what’s already in the studio.I hope this little trick is helpful. Sometimes the hardest part of creating isn’t the making itself.It’s everything standing between us and beginning.When my creative vitality feels abundant I found it helps to save the last ten minutes of every studio session prepping for tomorrow, this could look like: A quick tidy.A few notes in my sketchbook before the ideas disappear.Wedging tomorrow’s clay.Starting a bucket of reclaim (although I hate this one and need a better system for it) Rolling a few slabs so I can start building instead of wishing for them to firm up. I keep a bucket for tools that need washing instead of letting them quietly multiply across every surface.They’re small rituals, but they reduce the friction between today’s creativity and tomorrow’s beginning.My friends remember this- your creative momentum isn’t only built by what we make in our creative sessions…sometimes a softer kind of generosity is leaving ourselves a place that feels grounding as we return to our work. After all, artists are deeply sensitive to their surroundings. It’s one of our greatest gifts. We notice beauty, texture, light, and possibility. It makes sense that we would want the spaces we create in to feel encouraging. Officially reporting for Cousins Camp counselor duty. 🏕️This year’s camper merch? Handmade ceramic badges that my sister-in-law, @robyndraperstudio, and I designed together.Each cousin earns their badges by completing camp adventures like hiking, making crafts, learning the names of trees, and finding constellations in the night sky. For the last several months, I’ve been practicing quiet joy over productivity.My dear ones, you’ve likely noticed I’ve been a little quieter here. Creating less, sharing less, and moving at a different pace. I wanted to share a bit of why.In late May, my parents made a move across the country to the desert, and soon my sister’s family will follow so we can be close and care for one another as our family navigates a difficult diagnosis for my dad. It’s a season that has asked for more presence than production, more family dinners than studio hours, more memory-making than ceramic-making.The truth is, my creative energy has been limited. Not gone, just redirected.I’ve been learning that joy doesn’t deny what is hard. Instead, it offers a kind of durable defiance. It allows us to hold pain and beauty in the same hands, anchoring our hearts in gratitude and resilience rather than asking us to ignore the struggle.My energy has gone toward helping my parents settle into a new home. Toward making room for grief and gratitude to coexist. Toward learning that sometimes the most meaningful work is simply showing up for the people you love.I’ve always believed beauty lives in the everyday, and lately that beauty has looked less like finished collections and more like shared meals, evening walks, unpacked boxes, familiar stories, and time spent together.This season has felt a bit like a chrysalis. Quiet. Necessary. Transformative in ways I couldn’t fully see while living through it.As I begin to emerge, I find myself slowly returning to clay. Not with urgency or expectation, but with curiosity. With a softer hand. With a renewed appreciation for the simple act of making something by hand I even asked my dad if he’d like to spend some afternoons in the studio with me. Not to make anything important. Not to be productive. Just to sit at the table together and create.Thank you for being here, and for allowing me the space to move at the pace this season requires. I’d like to have some work available at the end of the summer but for now, I’m still choosing quiet joy, trusting that it will continue to guide both my life and my work. 🌻 #stilllife #beautifullife by @kristacoons_studio
