On this 117th Founders’ Day, we honor and reflect on the visionary women who laid the foundation for our cherished organization in 1908. Their courage, wisdom, and dedication continue to inspire generations to lead with purpose and serve with compassion.

Work travel has been unexpectedly busy. I am grateful to have a support system that enables me to move about the way I do.

A skill that I am continually refining is saying “no”🚫. There are good opportunities that come my way, but by saying no more frequently, I can say yes to what’s moving me closer to my professional and personal goals.

💡I also believe that what’s meant for me will be - and I’m out the business of overthinking.

Learn to say no, so that you can honor the commitments to yourself.

Choose joy. It’s not contingent on circumstances. Joy is personal, and comes from within.

😅Being honest, we all have work to do in recognizing that our capacity for joy can’t be reliant upon milestones that have yet to happen.

We don’t have to wait on future events before giving ourselves permission to feel fulfilled in the present. It’s about shifting our mindset to appreciate what already exists.

This doesn’t mean we ignore the challenges we face. We are human. But by nurturing our inner joy, we empower ourselves to navigate life with more resilience, optimism, and gratitude.

This spring, I attended the memorable and inspiring Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards. The celebratory event honors trailblazing women leaders who are Leading the Rise – The theme is a nod to those who are setting the path for the future of our world in an extraordinary year of change and possibility, with democracy itself at the forefront of major elections taking place in 2024.

When was the last time you celebrated how far you’ve come? Or are you so focused on what’s next that you’re overlooking how amazing your progress has been?

After watching the powerful @melindafrenchgates Moments that Make Us interview featuring @oprah and @gayleking I was compelled to share my thoughts on the relevance of their conversation to professional growth.

Oprah spoke about a pivotal moment where she deliberated over leaving her news anchor job in Baltimore to take a role in Chicago. Many people discouraged this transition, but Oprah’s best friend Gayle provided unwavering encouragement. Gayle was confident Oprah would thrive in the new opportunity, even as they discussed the pros and cons. Gayle was in Oprah’s corner 1000%, serving as the steadfast support system Oprah needed to make that big leap.

The power of close, supportive friendships absolutely impacts the latitude of what we can achieve professionally. Melinda, Oprah and Gayle refer to these irreplaceable connections as their “kitchen cabinet” - the people you can share anything with, without judgment, and who will always have your back.

It’s important to recognize the difference between having a rolodex of connections versus a true friends who are in your corner. You may know many people who wish you well and want to see you succeed, but that doesn’t automatically make them part of your kitchen cabinet. Those trusted confidants who will go to bat for you, no questions asked - that’s the kind of support system that can make all the difference.

Who makes up your “kitchen cabinet” - the friends and mentors you can rely on personally and as you navigate your career? Women who lift each other up is key. These are the people who will celebrate your wins, offer a listening ear during tough times, and even provide valuable advice and connections.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone. Surround yourself with a tribe of supporters who believe in you. Together, we can achieve so much more.
