I had an opportunity to share chapter one of my WIP at this year’s professional writer’s conference at Taylor University. It was my first time reading my work aloud — and I went first. Needless to say it was scary. But hey, I did it and received a some positive feedback, so that’s always encouraging.

This year served as a reminder to put in the work. Treat the process as a career, a side job even though the pay is lacking. I wonder where I might be a year from now with this mindset. Time will tell… 👩‍💻

Thanks to @racheljleitchauthor for the photo!

Looks like a mushroom hut. 🍄‍🟫🛖

Friends, I’m back and I’ve been writing! I’ve finally completed the prologue / chapter 1 of my WIP Ever Rest. It’s very much still a rough draft but I’m so excited to finally say there’s progress! by @kristischweitzerauthor

The deer steps into the scene
Only for a while does she linger
Fear and anticipation in her eyes
She is here, she is there, she is gone

…

I’m planning on taking November off for what was normally known as National Novel Writing Month (RIP Nanowrimo). Maybe longer. See y’all later.

✨The Art of Slowing Down — link in bio or read below ⬇️

So, my current summer show is The Summer I Turned Pretty. To prepare for the final season, I binged the first two seasons and timed it just right, finishing season 2 just days before season 3 launched in mid-July. Perfect. I settled in, ready to keep it going at my own pace.

But two episodes later…it stopped. No “next episode” button. Wait, what?

Turns out the producers decided to space out season 3 one episode a week — something that feels like a lost art these days. I joked to friends that I had to wait just like how it was done in the “olden days” (though yes, I was around for that). At first I was thrown off, but then I realized there’s actually value in waiting.

In the age of binge-watching, where we can consume an entire season in one sitting (I did that for a season of Stranger Things once — don’t recommend), spacing episodes weekly gives us time to experience every beat within the show. We have time to slow down and sit with the characters, whether the episode ended on a high or low note. It gives room for thought, reflection, and even community. I’ve seen it across the internet: fun posts, reels, and long-form videos of fans sharing their reactions, opinions, and predictions for the next episode (especially since the ending has been rumored to veer away from the books).

It reminds me of a book I read in college, Reading Like a Writer (2006) by Francine Prose, about being intentional with your reading — slowing down when able, to fully digest great literary works. You get so much more out of the piece when you can slow down. It helps readers become better readers and writers better emulators of the craft. As a naturally slow reader, I’ve always liked that concept: that there is a time and a place for slowing down and really appreciating what’s in front of you.

Maybe that’s the lesson here too. Not everything has to be consumed in one sitting or accomplished in one season of life. Sometimes the gift is in the waiting, in letting the story linger with us a little longer.
