Really jazzed about the updated iteration of my design for a new SB9 duplex with 3 ADU’s in Altadena. The project takes advantage of state law to replace two small bungalows on a single family lot with 5 gracious units. I definitely still need to dial in the shade of green metal that accents the design…

Last weekend, I had the great pleasure of marching in the LACMA @lacma Art Parade presented by Jeffrey Deitch @jeffreydeitchgallery. To celebrate the newly opened David Geffen Galleries building by Peter Zumthor, I built an oversized disco ball in the shape of the building to get the party started!

THANK YOU to my friend Jay for carrying it with me, the parade coordinators Emily and Britta, and my friends Adrienne @adrienneadar, Nicole @nicole_t_belle, and Susan @susanmadduxstudio for marching with us! And many more thanks to the other participating artists (1,500 in total) and the organizers for orchestrating a truly joyful celebration of creativity!! ❤️❤️❤️ I was very lucky to participate…

About the project:
The Zumthor building is only the latest project at LACMA to stir up controversy and excitement across Los Angeles. It is a concrete and glass totem onto which Angelenos are projecting their hopes and creative ideas. I created the disco ball version of the building to illuminate other parade participants and reflect the many ways we feel about the new building and our home town.

Out here PROUD! This year was my first time at the epically DIY and inclusive Dyke Day @dykedayla and the stylish party Ostbahnhof @thepartybyostbahnhof at the very cool venue Psstudio @psstudio_dtla. A highlight was the excellent live performance by Infinite Coles @4everinfinite_ 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

Totally stunned by my good friend Marta’s @martabelcher beautiful apartment in the MIRA tower by Studio Gang @studiogang. Thank you for inviting me in ❤️❤️

From Studio Gang: “The design responds to the need for dense housing in San Francisco and offers new models of sustainability, all while reinterpreting the city’s architectural traditions. It evolves the classic bay window, a familiar feature of San Francisco’s early houses, reimagining it in a high-rise context. Twisting incrementally over the height of the tower, the bays offer ample views, natural light throughout the day, and fresh air, and also inform the building’s distinctive form and texture—the result of special attention to the building’s energy performance and how it is experienced. Extending the habitable spaces within and offering platforms from which to view the city at all angles, the bays make every residence a corner unit.“

I was particularly impressed by the way the articulated facade breaks up the large open unit into more intimate spaces, making furniture placement more intentional and seamless. WOW 🤩 taken in MIRA SF by @kristopherswick

The Geffen Galleries Disco Ball is an oversized model of the Peter Zumthor-designed building covered in mirrors - designed to get the party started! It will be carried along with the parade, illuminating the participants and reflecting the many ways they feel about the new building and the future of Los Angeles.

Recently I caught the closing of the Domestic Disco show assembled by Emily Mast @ohemilymast at her always-on-point space The Feel @thefeel.la. As an art advisor and gallerist, Emily sources exceptional and accessible fine artworks from world-class artists that she calls friends!

One of them is my friend Adrienne Adar @adrienneadar , who once had an interactive sonic cacti installed at my former gallery space at the Collective Arts Incubator @collectiveartsincubator. After seeing her charming-AF nonfunctional rock purses, I am convinced that she is both an artist AND an inventor!

Absolutely energized and inspired by the posters submitted for Fort.LA’s @fort.losangeles Frame the Future poster design competition! Fort.LA hosted an exhibition and discussion panel at the grand old dame The Ebell @ebellofla to celebrate the submissions and select the winners. The first place winner, creative director John Susoeff @artrock77, succinctly delivered what seemed to be the common thread across many submissions: that we are already equipped with the regulatory frameworks, variety of viable project models and design solutions to build more housing in Los Angeles, we just need to implement them! Panelists and posters discussed a “Yes, And” approach that embraced many ways of building density without razing entire blocks or “reinventing the wheel.” The variety of innovative solutions on display made the future feel reachable and exciting!

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you Fort.LA for hosting!

Still head-over-heels for the white oak kitchen cabinets that I designed for long time family friends in Altadena. I worked closely with the clients to envision the complete overhaul of their kitchen a few years ago before LA’s recent fires. Although the house sustained damage last January, I’m thrilled to find out that we will not have to tear out the cabinets during remediation (just the client’s handpicked floors and countertops 😱). They will actually be replacing the floors for the whole house! Incidentally we had just torn out their primary bathroom in anticipation of a remodel, so we have a lot to do this summer… 💪

Check out my submission for the Frame the Future poster design competition organized by Friends of Residential Treasures: LA @fort.losangeles. It will be on view this Wednesday at their celebration at the historic Ebell club. I am excited to check out the other submissions and gather with people who care about the future of Los Angeles as much as I do!

The poster is my latest attempt to present an anti-displacement strategy for housing development and micro-urbanism in Los Angeles, based on my experiences developing the Collective Arts Incubator @collectiveartsincubator and influenced by urbanists like Jane Jacobs. It challenges the primacy of the large-scale intervention favored by developers and architects, one that rarely adequately accounts for the residents and contours of community that must be displaced to accomplish them. The retention of existing affordable residential (and commercial) building stock plus the smaller, more context-aware scale of interventions make housing development faster and less expensive. And smaller, more affordable projects can be undertaken by a wider range of community members (homeowners, cooperatives, non-profits, and government agencies) to shape a more diverse built environment that can meet a wider range of needs and desires.

My goal is to finesse and package this strategy into an open source ‘blueprint’ that can be shared freely with anyone who might be interested in building more walkable, affordable, and spatially diverse cities, where public transit and bicycle infrastructure can thrive. I hope to show that investment (private, nonprofit, or public) in projects like this can ensure the provision of affordable housing while providing long-term financial stability for the investors and residents.

This pitch is still very much in-the-works, so any feedback is eagerly solicited and appreciated, including notes about the design or content presented in the (cropped) poster!
