As I reflect on my 42nd chapter/2023...honestly, Id rather not! I just want to forget that this year ever happened. But alas, there is no neuralyzer in real life (you know...the little device that @willsmith used in Men in Black to erase people's memories)

So we're just going to look forward and declare that Im done with surviving...Im ready to thrive.

Im done with over consumption rooted in fear (I'll delve more into this later)...its now about intentional and inspired action.

Not living in alignment with my core values has been one of the main causes of my depression...no mas. Moving forward, my actions will be aligned with my core values, which will serve as my "North Star".

Some career moments are bigger than the job. They’re full-circle moments. And this was definitely one of mine.

Today, Netflix premieres the new generation of A Different World—exactly 39 years after the original series first aired on NBC.

And somehow, almost four decades later, I had the opportunity to groom one of its new cast members, Jordan Aaron Hall.

If you grew up with A Different World, then you already know. ❤️

For the first time, I saw people on television who looked like me. Characters I could see myself in. Every time I heard that infamous guitar riff, I knew I was about to spend the next 30 minutes at Hillman College. I was PART Whitley, PART Kimberly, with just a dash of Freddie.

For six seasons, I loved with them. Laughed with them. Learned with them. Grew up with them.

That show wasn’t just television. It gave us a glimpse of Black excellence, friendship, love, identity, HBCU life, activism, adulthood and all the beautifully messy lessons that come with figuring out who you are.

This November will mark 20 years since I began working professionally as a makeup artist.

My career has taken me places I never imagined, introduced me to incredible people and given me experiences that still make me stop sometimes and think…

“Wait…is this really my life?”

This was one of those days.

I spent the day working with Jordan and had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell.

And at one point, there I was…

Sitting in a green room with Whitley, Freddie and Ron as they laughed, joked and reminisced about the show and the memories they created together.

I honestly had to take a moment and just soak it all in.

Because never in a million years could the girl sitting in front of her television watching A Different World have imagined that almost 40 years later, she would be sitting in that room.

They were all so genuinely kind, humble, warm and gracious, which made the experience even more special.

To meet—and in my own small way now be connected professionally to—the legacy of a television show that was so influential, inspiring and culturally significant to my generation is something that I will never forget! by @krystynjmakeup
