Donald Trump’s latest sneer about British and allied NATO troops “not serving on the front line” in Afghanistan isn’t just wrong , it’s morally obscene.

Afghanistan was not a film set with Americans in heroic close-up and everyone else sipping tea safely off-camera. The “front line” was a moving perimeter of dust, patrols, IEDs, ambushes and body bags, and Britain, Canada, Denmark, the Dutch and others were in it , up to the neck. They did the same grim work: clearing, holding, mentoring, bleeding. Many didn’t come home. To imply they “stayed back” is to defame the living and vandalise the dead.

This is Trump’s signature trick: he doesn’t describe history, he manufactures grievance. The myth of the lonely, exploited America being cheated by “foreigners” is political junk food, it flatters the audience (“only we did the hard work”) and absolves the bully (“if alliances are scams, betrayal is smart”). It is the moral universe of the casino: everyone is a mark, and decency is for suckers, but Afghanistan wasn’t a casino, and the fallen are not chips.

When he says allies weren’t on the front line, he isn’t offering a technical critique. He’s speaking in the bar-room dialect of the blowhard: we fought, you shirked. It’s an accusation of cowardice made by a man who has never met a sacrifice he couldn’t outsource, and never met a service record he couldn’t smear if it helped him applause, and the strategic stupidity is almost as vile as the insult. Alliances are not souvenirs; they are deterrence, built from trust and shared risk. When a U.S. president cheapens allied sacrifice, he hands propaganda to every enemy who wants the West split and sulking. He signals that loyalty earns contempt, and that the dead can be used as punchlines in a domestic tantrum.

Trump’s defenders will say he’s “just talking.” As if the presidency is an open-mic night. Words from that office shape reality, and in this case they degrade honour, weaken solidarity, and spit on graves.

If Trump wants to talk about “front lines,” he should start with his own: the line between truth and the sludge he peddles. by @kslansdown
