Ben Sakoguchi’s exhibition, What Was America, at RAG Cultural Center in Rancho Arroyo Grande is open through this weekend, by appointment. To book a viewing appointment, please email events@ragculture.org Bel Ami cordially invites you to the inaugural exhibition at the RAG Cultural Center. Featuring selected works by Ben Sakoguchi, created between the 1990s and the present day, this presentation honors an artist with close ties to the California landscape and its history. Located at Rancho Arroyo Grande (RAG)—a historic, 3,500-acre ranch and vineyard ten miles inland from the Pacific coast—RAG Cultural Center is an interdisciplinary non-profit advancing transformative cultural production by supporting marginalized creative practices, fostering inclusive community partnerships, and encouraging diverse cultural exchange. Ben Sakoguchi is renowned for his ongoing series of Orange Crate Label paintings, which co-opt the iconic advertising language of vintage California orange crates to transmit the artist’s wry, discerning commentary on politics, culture, and history. Since the 1970s, Sakoguchi has produced hundreds of works in the Orange Crate Label series: each painting is the same size with a roughhewn pine frame, and includes a brand name, an image of an orange, and an illustration of a historic person or event. In spite of the series’ rigid parameters, an extraordinary variety of topics and concerns have entered Sakoguchi’s schema, from acerbic portrayals of politicians and institutions, to lighthearted riffs on aeronautic inventions and art historical masterworks. Well, we knew we’d have to open Walker Street sooner or later. Turns out it’s sooner. We’re kicking things off with an absolute banger of a lineup on 7/9 that we are incredibly proud to be hosting alongside George @georgethechen at @zumaudio . Russell Kwong @blaze_exe is the owner and chef of Mee Heng Low, one of California’s oldest Chinese restaurants, where he has helped preserve both a beloved local institution and San Luis Obispo’s Chinese American history. Alongside his work in the kitchen, he is an experimental musician performing as Diurnal Emissions, creating immersive ambient sound works that have been featured in independent music and arts spaces. Whether through food, music, or historic preservation, Kwong’s work reflects a quiet dedication to craft, community, and the enduring value of cultural stewardship. Kathleen Kim @kteekay1 is a Los Angeles based (with ties to AG) artist, performer, violinist, and cultural organizer whose work has helped shape the city’s experimental arts community. As a cofounder of the influential nonprofit Human Resources Los Angeles, she has helped build one of the country’s leading artist run spaces for performance, sound, and interdisciplinary art. Her own practice spans experimental music, improvisation, and performance, reflecting a deep commitment to collaboration, artistic risk taking, and the creation of spaces where contemporary art can thrive.
