My debut novel is out today!

I’m so excited to be part of the Baltimore Book Festival this weekend in Waverly! The festival is 100% free and this year’s lineup includes Laverne Cox, Austin Channing Brown, Susan Stryker, Hillary Gonzalez, Devin Allen, Susan Muaddi Darraj, and more.

My debut novel WASP’S NEST is about an artist who attends his wealthy ex-wife’s Cape Cod wedding with a chaotic young writer as his plus one. It’s messy and queer and it features a love triangle that’s actually a triangle.

On Saturday I’ll be in conversation with @emjsmith whose debut novel Nothing Serious is about a female tech executive who begins to spiral when she suspects her male best friend and longtime crush may be involved in a woman’s murder.

Emily and I are going to be talking about writing complicated relationships, what we’ve learned during the debut experience, and more. One of the coolest things about writing long form fiction is the way characters surprise me with every draft.

Wasp’s Nest took a year to draft, and over a year to revise before I sold it (after which, I worked with my editor on more revisions). In that time, each of the central characters became more complex, messier, softer, and more endearing.

Tess’s control of her image waned with each pass. Peter’s romantic streak peeked through. Mitch’s concept of his own queerness shifted into something with a living, breathing core.

I discovered Georgia’s secret, and Nia’s too, and loved them both even more for it. Sebastian revealed surprising depth, and Warren stepped into the foreground when I least expected it.

And just like that, Hot Debut Summer has drawn to a close.

The debut experience continues to be surreal. I’m so grateful to have connected with these incredible authors before and during my own book launch. They’ve inspired me and, in many cases, been a lifeline.
