Paris Frottage Project

Dates (time stamps) are an obsession for me since a long time. Maybe because they’re so universal. You find them everywhere in the world — carved, stamped, printed, painted. They mean something different to everyone, but they all carry the same basic idea about time.

Paris is full of these stamps, little marks embedded in the concrete. I first noticed them in 2022, again in 2024. Somehow, they stayed in my head. Last month I finally gave myself the time to follow them. I spent a week walking through Paris, looking down at the streets, searching for these traces. All over Paris, different arrondissements, different surfaces. Different shades of black appearing on paper.

With simple things like paper and pencil I started rubbing the surface, slowly transferring something from the street onto the pages. A fragment of something that was never really meant to be collected. An imprint, an abstraction, a record of something temporary that is disappearing already.

I guess I did this work for Paris, obviously. To the city as a constantly changing surface. But also to the handmade gesture. And for sure to On Kawara (even though on a very subconscious level), whose work has been a reference and a fascination of mine for a long time. But also maybe as an homage to the pencil. I have been using one since I was a kid and somehow I never got tired of it. Graphite, pressure, paper. So little is needed to make something appear. Especially now, when so much of what we see and make is becoming increasingly digital, automated and generated, I find myself drawn back to the physical act of making something with my own hands.

Maybe these prints will eventually become an exhibition, maybe a book. For now, I will frame some of them and to put them on my walls. But perhaps that isn’t really the point. The point was simply to do it. To finally take this idea that had been stuck in my head for years and let it exist outside of me. taken in Paris, France by @kuba_cs

Six years ago, KUBA Creative Services began as an idea — a space to explore the intersection of creative direction, branding and handcrafted expression.

Since then, the studio has grown through curiosity, experimentation, and an ongoing commitment to thoughtful design. 20 sketchbooks later, countless concepts have been drawn, refined, discarded, rediscovered. Some became identities, objects, and campaigns. Others remained sketches, fragments, and unfinished thoughts — equally important parts of the process I guess.

What often remains unseen is the accumulation of small decisions, conversations, revisions, and moments of doubt/overthinking/magic/.. that shape every project. Thank you to all my clients, collaborators, friends and family for being part of this journey.

Founded in 2020, KUBA Creative Services continues to grow and evolve in directing new projects that are already taking shape. I‘m forever grateful that I‘m starting every new work with the same passion as always. Here’s to what has been created, what remains unfinished, and everything still to come. Thank you 🩶.

The making of: Armin & Dorothea Hofmann Archive

For more than two years, we have been working closely with Matthias Hofmann on the conception, development, and realization of the Armin & Dorothea Hofmann Archive.

It is a true privilege to engage with such an extraordinary body of work, which has inspired us for many years. We are honored to contribute to preserving and sharing this remarkable legacy. More to come soon. taken in Luzern, Switzerland by @kuba_cs

@laurakneisel has been a great support and wonderful part of our team during her internship in the past months!

It‘s been a pleasure working with her and we truly appreciate the care and precision she brought to every task she worked on. Her thoughtful approach and craftsmanship made a big difference across several of our most important projects. Thank you Laura! taken in Zürich, Switzerland by @kuba_cs
