Some culture writing from the year.

Beginning with my most recent for Native Mag:

“It’s not often you watch a DJ play old and recent releases on vinyl, spinning analog turntables through a rotary mixer, but House House House gave audiences this experience last year in March. In a heady gathering tucked into the rolling hills of Maitama, House and Disco drifted and LEDs flashed through the cool night air. Hours slipped by as people gathered, let loose, and connected and by the end of the night, you were left wanting more.“

When you write from compulsion, it becomes your life.

“Upon arriving at Olubi’s house, hundreds of artworks of varying sizes screamed, ‘Look at me!’. Moving from the scorched walls and charred sink of the kitchen, into a tiny hallway leading to the living room, trying to take in. The pieces mainly consisted of abstract paintings with vibrant, high-contrast color schemes. There were a few photographs, the most striking of which was a radiographic image displayed against the backdrop of sunlight through one of the windows.”

“I met Pasta at a party in late December 2023, just after I moved to Abuja. I had seen a flyer for the event and thought it looked like the perfect usher into the city’s alternative nightlife. The event was MOTION.”

“Taken together, the album offers a distinct, slightly left-field take on what Nigerian music can sound like. For a deeper look, I spoke with FāëM about their journey, the process behind WAWDH?!, and its reception so far.”

“Born in Lagos, his childhood was soundtracked by local and foreign music from the 80s. He shared, “My dad was a record collector and would play songs I only realized were electronic after I got into the genre.” Among them were tracks from Williams Onyeabor, a pioneering Nigerian musician who blended Afrobeat, highlife, and psychedelic funk with analog synth programming.

Three years ago, Sunny visited Nigeria and during his stay, he witnessed the fast-growing rave scene and was eager to share his sound.”

“The cost of a night out is at an all-time high and thrill-seekers are choosing the safety of the tried and true and one can scarcely fault caution when so many events sel by @kuffyeyo

You’re invited to “The Art of Cinema,” a screening of experimental cinema, featuring boundary-pushing moving-image work, which we have curated for this year’s edition of Lagos Gallery Weekend.

On March 7th, 2026, we’ll be showing “Nkemakonam,” by Dika Ofoma (@dikaofoma) and Ugochukwu Onuoha, and “Banana Boat,” by Kufreabasi Eyo (@kuffyeyo), both of which explore visual abstraction, and the dynamic intersection of film and contemporary art.

Following the film-screening will be a post-screening discussion between the filmmakers Dika Ofoma and Kufreabasi Eyo. The conversation will be moderated by renowned film critic Seyi Lasisi (@seyivortex).

FILM THERAPY LINEUP - OCT ‘25 EDITION

“BANANA BOAT” BY KUFREABASI EYO

Banana Boat follows a young woman drifting through a dreamlike world where memory, desire, and grief blur into one another. Caught between an inconsistent lover, a cynical sister, and the haunting of her own mind, she confronts the wreckage of a relationship that was never meant to stay afloat. Through surreal imagery and visual symbols, from void-like studio to a grass field—she journeys toward acceptance.

Introducing New Directions, a new strand of afrosonic Film Club dedicated to short films and documentaries by emerging Nigerian filmmakers.

For our first edition, we have four films, with four ways of seeing Nigerian life right now.

🛼 Diamond In The Rough by @nvd_ugobgo - Lagos through the eyes of Daniel Ogbogu, an aggressive rollerblader and founder of the Shinobi Blade Clan. From Marina to Agege, Daniel and his community hack street obstacles and document their world over a year — using movement to find soul inside the chaos of West Africa's megacity.

🌊 Banana Boat by @kuffyeyo - A young woman drifts through a dreamlike world where memory, desire, and grief blur into one another. Caught between an inconsistent lover, a cynical sister, and the haunting of her own mind, she journeys — through surreal imagery and visual symbols — toward acceptance.

⚡️ Everything Lasts And Nothing Ends by @retepoki & Nosazemn Agbontean - Zainab is in Lagos to spread the word and chop life. Amaka is ready to leave the only city she has ever known. When the spirit of Lagos brings them together, it also threatens to pull them apart. An unstoppable force meets an immovable one.

🕯️ God’s Wife by @dikaofoma - A young widow, still in mourning, is propositioned by her late husband's brother. When she refuses, he threatens to have her removed from her own home. Caught between her Catholic faith and an impossible demand, she must decide what she is willing to sacrifice.
