This past week was busy at Stauffer-Flint Hall with the Kansas Student Press Association hosting 68 high school journalism students for the Jayhawk Media Workshop!📸📝Students learned the basics of photography, design, yearbook planning and multimedia storytelling, featuring instructors from local high schools and KU faculty-led sessions. Congratulations to our advertising students who recently competed in the National Student Advertising Competition finals in Austin, Texas!👏Students presented their advertising campaign for the NFL at the American Advertising Federation's annual conference, "AdAmerica” and presented it to NFL CMO Tim Ellis, VP of Global Consumer Marketing Melissa Solis and SVP of Social Responsibility Anna Isaacson. Students worked on this project for eight months, with KU’s team making it past the district level for the first time since 1989. The team was also awarded with best presentation team at the district level. This year was also the first time KU made it to the finals of the competition. Congrats to this amazing team of students! by @kujschool

Our last #SeniorSpotlight is Lucy Perfitt!Lucy has spent the past four years behind the scenes as a communications assistant at the J-School as well as a member of her sorority, Delta Gamma. She has gathered professional experience in Los Angeles for three internships with FOX Entertainment, JNC Special Events and MML PR — gaining a love for social media marketing and PR."Looking back on my time at KU and the J-School, I'm so grateful for every opportunity, experience and moment here. Working at the J-School since my freshman year truly set the tone for everything that followed, and I've learned more than I ever could have imagined. Rock Chalk! by @kujschool

Next up in our #SeniorSpotlight is Annalynn Phanthadeth! Annalynn is the head of photography for @eudoratimes and is graduating with a journalism and mass communications degree with a concentration in multimedia journalism and minors in photography and sport management. "Choosing the J-School was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Over the past four years, I’ve learned so much from my instructors across journalism, photography and sport management. For the last two years, I’ve worked at the Eudora Times, where I’ve had the opportunity to cover everything from state sports tournaments and band and choir concerts to student life, breaking news and major community stories. A special thank you to Dr. Teri Finneman for continuously pushing me to become a better journalist and for providing some of the most rewarding opportunities during my time at KU. I couldn’t have asked for a better college experience. While I’m heartbroken to close this chapter, I’m excited for what’s ahead as I begin my career at McPherson College. Next up in our #SeniorSpotlight is Rashada Smith! Rashada is graduating with a degree in digital marketing communications, advertising and public relations with a minor in political science. She also served as a journalism school ambassador. "KU was definitely always an option, but little did I know that the J-School would end up becoming such a big and impactful part of my life and college career! The School of Journalism has given me so many opportunities, including conducting exciting research with Dr. Hendershot, giving tours and meeting families from across the country, and even helping me land an incredible internship. Not only that, but the J-School has also gifted me with some of my best friends and connections I will never truly forget. The faculty and staff here are top-notch, and you can really tell they care about this school and all of us in it. Thank you, William Allen White School of Journalism, for everything. He currently writes for Jayhawk Slant covering KU football, men's basketball and baseball. "My time in the J-School has given me some of the coolest experiences during my time at KU. I was blessed to get the opportunity to cover KU sports over my four years here, something I grew up loving. The J-School helped me realize my passion for sportswriting, along with meeting so many amazing people I've built lifelong connections with. I always have, and always will be, a Jayhawk. Next up in our #SeniorSpotlight: Val Montanez!Val has been working at the @universitydailykansan as a photographer for four years and served as multimedia editor the last two. She is graduating with a degree in multimedia journalism with minors in photography and sport management. She has also held an internship with the Kansas City Monarchs and freelances with the Lawrence Journal-World."I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been given through the journalism school throughout my time at the University of Kansas. I could never thank the faculty enough for believing in me as a photojournalist and allowing me opportunities to travel across the country to cover the Jayhawks. To all my friends and collegues I have made throughout my time in the j-school, you guys have no idea how much you have helped me grow as a photojournalist. Next up in our #SeniorSpotlight is Emily Sutter!Emily is a reporter and MMJ for @playmakersku and a member of @kujhnews She majored in sports media and society with a minor in Spanish. She works for CBS, Hurrdat Sports as a social media intern and a News/Sports intern at WIBW-TV in Topeka."The J-School has been such a big part of my college experience. I've found some of my best friends here and I'm so thankful that I've been able to create so many fun memories in the J-School. I've learned so may incredible skills that I know will take me wherever I want to go after graduation. Being a part of Playmakers has allowed me to go to so many football and basketball games behind the scenes, which has been such a cool part of my journey. I've had such a great support system behind me with all of my instructors here, my friends, and my family. I cannot wait to hopefully be a sideline reporter in the future and always be proud that I'm a Jayhawk Journalist!" by @kujschool

Next up in our #SeniorSpotlight is Joe Biundo! “My experience in the J-School has been absolutely irreplaceable. It was never where I planned to end up, but I could not be more appreciative of all the opportunities I've been given from it. Almost three years in The Agency have allowed me to improve as a creative while nurturing my interest in branding and strategy. Participating twice in the National Student Advertising Competition has surrounded me with so many talented people, and it's been one of the most rewarding experiences during my time here. Being in KU Ad Club for two years has taken me across the country and allowed me to not only meet professionals in advertising but also learn about the field that I was interested in. The school has always been a place where I've felt welcomed, and I've met so many amazing people through my involvement and classes. My time in Jayhawk Jukebox has allowed me to be a part of a broadcast, but it has, more importantly, introduced me to such a lively group of people that I'm always grateful to be around. Over the past four years, my work here has become my life, and I believe that dedication has paid off.
