Sunday morning school working bee.

🎋 Bamboo weaving in Shibukawa | 北橘町で竹細工

A wonderful weekend learning traditional bamboo craft here in Shibukawa. 🎋

We started with long pieces of giant bamboo and, over two days, learned how to split, cut and prepare them into fine strips before weaving them into mutsume-ami (六つ目編み / six-eye weave) flower baskets.

I was incredibly lucky to learn from two different sensei, one each day, both so generous with their knowledge, time and patience. There was something wonderful about beginning with bamboo in its raw form and gradually understanding how it becomes something so intricate.

One of the things I continue to love about living here is discovering the knowledge held within local communities. These skills don’t continue by accident — they survive because people are willing to teach, share and pass them on. I’m very grateful to our sensei and everyone who made this experience possible. ❤️

Our finished pieces will also be entered in this year’s 20th Shibukawa Tachibana Bamboo Village Festival (第20回渋川市たちばな竹の里フェスティバル) in October. 🎋

渋川市北橘町で、竹細工を学ぶ素敵な週末を過ごしました。🎋

長い竹を割るところから始まり、二日間かけて、竹を細く切って整え、一本一本の竹ひごを作り、六つ目編みの花籠を作りました。

二日間、それぞれ違う先生に教えていただきました。お二人とも、ご自身の知識や技術を惜しみなく、とても丁寧に教えてくださり、本当にありがとうございました。一本の竹が少しずつ細い竹ひごになり、美しい編み目と形になっていく過程を自分の手で経験できたことが、とても印象に残っています。

渋川で暮らしていて嬉しいことの一つは、地域の中に受け継がれている知識や技術に出会えることです。こうした技術が今も残っているのは、教え、分かち合い、次の人へ伝えてくださる方々がいるからこそだと思います。

先生方、そしてこの機会を作ってくださった皆さまに心から感謝しています。❤️

今回作った作品は、10月に開催される「第20回渋川市たちばな竹の里フェスティバル」にも出品されます。🎋

また一つ、渋川の素敵なところを知ることができました。

痕跡 — Traces

夏のあいだ、このこけしにいろいろなものと出会わせました。
出会いの中には、洗い流されて消えていくものもあれば、痕跡を残すものもあります。
そして時には、出会いから新しい何かが生まれます。

Over the summer, I let this kokeshi encounter many things.
Some encounters wash away and disappear; others leave traces.
And sometimes, from an encounter, something new emerges.

Shibukawa Matsuri: Beyond moist.

So much rain. The floats got raincoats.

And somehow it became even more magical — lanterns glowing through plastic, enormous illuminated shapes moving through the rain.

A magical version of Matsuri I’m very glad I got to see.

榛名湖花火大会
Haruna Lake Fireworks Festival

My favourite part was watching the fireworks casually launched into the lake from the back of the boat, while the sound eerily reverberated around the volcanic crater.

私のお気に入りは、船の後ろから湖へ花火が次々と打ち上げられる様子と、その音が火山のカルデラに不思議なほどこだまして響き渡る瞬間でした。

👺 Following the Tengu through Numata. The Numata Tengu Festival has been celebrated since the Edo period. In Japanese folklore, Tengu are mountain guardians believed to protect people and ward off evil. The giant Tengu are carried exclusively by teams of women. We loved joining thousands of locals as we followed the procession through the streets of Numata to the hypnotic beat of the taiko drums.

👺 天狗とともに歩く沼田。沼田天狗まつりは江戸時代から続く伝統あるお祭りです。日本の伝承では、天狗は人々を守り、災いを払う山の守り神とされています。巨大な天狗は女性だけの担ぎ手によって担がれます。私たちは何千人もの地元の人たちと一緒に、太鼓の響きに導かれながら、天狗行列とともに沼田の街を歩くひとときを心から楽しみました。

昨年、渋川の全国創作こけし美術展を見て、その素晴らしい作品に感動しました。

今年は、家族3人で参加します！

白木のこけしを受け取り、これからアイデアを考える時間が始まります。どんな作品になるのか、私たちもまだわかりません。

今からとても楽しみです！🌸

Last year we visited the National Creative Kokeshi Art Exhibition in Shibukawa and loved seeing the incredible creativity on display.

This year, the three of us are joining in!

We’ve collected our blank kokeshi dolls, and now the brainstorming begins. We have no idea what they’ll become yet—and that’s part of the fun.

We can’t wait!

🌾🐸 Today we enjoyed planting ancient varieties of rice with local families here in Shibukawa.

We got wonderfully muddy, shared plenty of smiles, and were delighted by tiny frogs darting between our feet. Low-flying dragonflies skimmed across the paddy, almost as if they were watching over our rice planting.

A huge thank you to the team from Shibukawa City’s Cultural Properties Protection Division (渋川市教育委員会文化財保護課) and all the volunteers who organised this wonderful experience. We’re already looking forward to coming back later in the year to see how the rice has grown. 🌾

今日、渋川で地域の皆さんと一緒に古代米の田植えを楽しみました。

泥だらけになりながら、たくさん笑って、小さなカエルたちが足元をぴょんぴょん逃げ回る姿に癒やされました。低く飛ぶトンボが田んぼの上を行き来しながら、私たちの田植えを見守ってくれているようでした。

この素敵な体験を企画・運営してくださった渋川市教育委員会文化財保護課の皆さん、そしてボランティアの皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。また稲の成長を見に来られるのを楽しみにしています！🌾🐸 taken in Shibukawa Gunma Pref by @kukileaf

Magical fireflies dancing in the darkness.

For a little while, I felt like a child chasing magic. ✨
