Film archiving and preservation can extend beyond the recovery and restoring deteriorating materials. The boom in technology has brought forth the role of AI in preserving film heritage. Use of AI may often result in having to make decisions on colour grading, sound design, aspect ratio adjustments, or the reconstruction of missing footage – altering aesthetics. Interpretations often involves choices between historical fidelity, artistic intention, and present-day viewing expectations, raising questions about authenticity and cultural responsibility. This session will bring scholars, researchers, academicians together to talk about the future of film history preservation with the technological acceleration and eventually the ‘future of memories’. Old film advertisements, pamphlets, magazines, and books are not just nostalgic keepsakes—they are invaluable records of cinema’s past. These printed materials preserve fragments of film culture, from contemporary reviews and journals to rare publications that shaped how audiences understood cinema. They offer scholars, writers, and enthusiasts vital entry points into exploring Indian film history, helping to piece together narratives that films alone cannot tell. Yet, while these archives open windows to cultural memory, questions of ownership and rights remain pressing. Who truly holds these materials—the publishers, collectors, institutions, or the public? And how can they be preserved and made accessible for future generations without erasing their histories of circulation and use? This panel will bring together scholars, archivists, writers, and cinephiles to reflect on the role of cinema literature in documenting history and to debate the challenges of preservation, access, and ownership in a rapidly changing archival landscape.

Before hashtags, the passion for Indian cinema flourished in early online forums like RMIM (rec.music.indian.misc) and Passion for Cinema. These platforms became vital hubs where dispersed fans evolved into unofficial archivists, collaboratively preserving our cinematic heritage.
The second session, at Future of Memories symposium, will explore how these digital communities, driven by shared knowledge and passion, built invaluable repositories of film history, music, and memorabilia. We will examine their role in democratizing cultural memory through crowd-sourced archiving and metadata creation, making film history accessible to all.
The conversation will also address the significant challenges these communities face today, including issues of sustainability, recognition, and preserving digital archives for future generations. Join us to celebrate these pioneers of online fandom and discuss the future of community-driven preservation.

Indian cinema isn’t just preserved in archives — it lives in memories.
What can octogenarian cinephiles teach us about film history?

At Future of Memories, a one-day symposium on film history documentation and archiving, we have a panel specifically dedicated to this aspect that will bring together voices who have lived through cinema’s golden decades. Their stories humanize history and show us how memories shape the way we understand film culture today. The panelists will include eminent intermedia historian and archivist Ravikant, film critic Sukhpreet Kahlon and film enthusiast and archivist Pavan Jha. Alongside, we will have voices with lived experiences of the lost time who will lend their memories in forming the history of Indian cinema.
Save this post to revisit later and share with someone who loves film history.

After 6 years of rigorous documenting and archiving Indian Cinema’s rich history and heritage, Cinemaazi - the flagship project of Indian Cinema Heritage Foundation, is set to start a national dialogue and movement on archiving and preserving cinematic heritage. Throughout, Indian cinema has managed to entertain, educate and even agitate the viewers through its myriad storytelling ways. However, its rich history and content stays neglected and undocumented, with only a handful films and persons remembered. The Foundation is organising a one day symposium - Future of Memories: Archiving and Preserving Cinematic Heritage, on Saturday 15 November 2025 in New Delhi, to bring together the key stakeholders and start a meaningful dialogue and set agenda for future work.
