WHAT IS THE MOVIE ABOUT?

In the wake of the loss of her mother, the filmmaker travels into the heart of Jamaican countryside to research Kumina, an ancestral ritual. The ancient practice, she learns, is a driving force in Jamaica’s culture and identity, yet its leaders have historically been discarded as witches and criminalized.

Jamaica’s post-colonial renaissance enabled Queenie to share her practice with the world. Today, Queenie’s mysterious world reveals a divergent pathway to freedom, healing, and transformation-for those who choose it.

Imogene “Queenie” Kennedy was a contemporary priestess in post-colonial Jamaica who catapulted her African spiritual practice into renown. She died in 1998. This film honors her memory and shares her powerful voice through rare archival footage and sound.

Sharing a little joy from our tour of the UK!
.
.
#Highlights: meeting with an incredible group of engaged Caribbean lawyers sharing their heritage and childhood experiences. Chatting with the esteemed scholar, choreographer and cultural practitioner Dr. “H” Patten about when he hosted Queenie in London in 1979. Eye-opening talk with students, faculty and elders at the University of Bristol, and of course, a little lime.

Today we lift up Marjorie Whiley and ask you to support a fund that friends and colleagues are putting together to help defray the escalating costs of her health care. Link in bio.

Whiley, interviewed in Kumina Queen, is one of the iconic figures in Jamaica's cultural renewal. In 1965 she joined the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) as a pianist and later became Musical Director and Leader of the NDTC Singers. The NDTC drew upon the talents of this emerging artist. While she went on to compose many original works, her most important collaborations turn on the arrangements/orchestrations of the traditional lore employed by co-founder and former Artistic Director Rex Nettleford to produce such master-works as Myal (1974), Drumscore (1979) and Gerrehbenta (1983). Marjorie served as Head of the Folk Music Research Department of the Jamaica School of Music, which became a Division of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and as a member of the faculty at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
