Rooting in our New Home Far From Home was a workshop on belonging, roots and memory that took place on 30th May, the day after the opening of Hvileåret @kunstnerneshus

I had a plan…

Through the potato, we would map our routes of belonging, the joys and pains of acceptance; through okra, we would look at the stories we carry with us and food as resistance to homogeneity and assimilation; and through the apple tree we would meditate on the idea of rootedness in a shared experience.

…but through the unique constellation of us in the room together, our conversation found its own path. Our time together reminded me how vital it is to have spaces, and create spaces, where we can share the complexities of our identity and sense of home: we spoke about how large cities like London, New York and Singapore have space to hold multiplicity, where everyone has a story of somewhere else, and how we are finding ways to root in smaller places in Norway. We spoke about the paths we have travelled through ourselves, to finding an internal home as our external ones shift; we spoke about the different generations of travellers in our families and privileges we have to explore our culture, that they might have had to leave behind, and through this, we spoke about return (and the origins of SNFF, the Singapore Nordic Film Festival who had their first festival in 2025).

Thank you to those who joined and shared, I came away feeling proud of our collective, ongoing resilience and curiosity.

You can find some listening exercises in the capsule with roots for the duration of the exhibition along with potatoes and peppers grown in water- two plants with their own stories of migration. Each of the five capsules in the installation are activated through a gathering and you are welcome to use the spaces for your own meditations at any time, whether this is a nap, reading, looking out over the trees or people watching, streaming your favourite program or podcast, calling an old friend- however rest appears for you.

🌊 En av de to gruppene som er invitert av Cecilia Vicuña til å bidra til Minga for havet er Redd Repparfjorden / Ellos Riehpovuotna.

I flere år har de kjempet mot planene om å dumpe gruveavfall fra Nussir-gruven i Riehpovuotna/Repparfjorden – en nasjonal laksefjord og et livsviktig oppvekst- og vandringsområde for villaksen. Deres kamp inngår i en bredere konflikt om beskyttelse av hav og kyst i Norge.

Samme dag som vi besøkte fjorden for å forberede utstillingen, åpnet European Surveillance Authority (ESA) en traktatbruddsak mot Norge knyttet til tillatelsene for gruvedrift. I juni slo Høyesterett fast at statens tillatelse til å dumpe gruveavfall i Førdefjorden var ugyldig – en dom med mulige ringvirkninger. Likevel ble aktivister fra Redd Repparfjorden i samme periode ilagt bøter på over 200 000 kroner etter protestaksjonene sine.

I Minga for havet hedres de som havbeskyttere. Den samiske quipuen i utstillingen samler deres budskap og materialer sanket ved fjorden.

🌊 One of the two groups invited by Cecilia Vicuña to contribute to Minga for the Sea is Redd Repparfjorden / Ellos Riehpovuotna. For years, they have resisted plans to dump copper mining waste from the Nussir mine into Riehpovuotna/Repparfjorden, a designated National Salmon Fjord vital for wild Atlantic salmon.

Their struggle is part of a broader conflict over marine and coastal protection in Norway. On the very day we visited the fjord to prepare the exhibition, the EU opened infringement proceedings against Norway regarding the mining permits. In June, Norway’s Supreme Court ruled against the state’s permit for mine waste dumping in Førdefjorden—an important decision with potential wider implications. Yet in the same period, Redd Repparfjorden activists were fined over NOK 200,000 following protest actions.

In Minga for the Sea, they are honored as sea protectors. The Sami quipu brings together their messages and materials gathered directly from the fjord.

En av de to gruppene invitert til Minga for havet av Cecilia Vicuña er Red de Mujeres Originarias por la Defensa del Mar (Nettverk av urfolkskvinner for havets forsvar) 🌊🪸🌿

Nettverket samler kvinner fra 11 territorier og 5 urfolksgrupper som alle deler en dyp relasjon til havet og et felles engasjement for å beskytte det. Gjennom sitt arbeid forsvarer de kyst- og havområder mot ødeleggelse, og styrker både politisk og kulturell motstandskraft i sine lokalsamfunn.

Deres praksis handler om å holde havet som et levende felles gode – gjennom kunnskapsdeling, styrking av lokale livsformer og kollektiv handling på tvers av territorier.

Gjenstander laget og sendt av kvinnene i nettverket, sammen med deres egne fortellinger, er en del av Minga for havet. 🌸🛶🐋

Den 7. august kl. 18.00 besøker to medlemmer av nettverket Kunstnernes Hus for en samtale om arbeidet deres. Samtalen er gratis og åpen for alle – velkommen!

One of the two groups invited to Minga for the Sea by Cecilia Vicuña is Red de Mujeres Originarias por la Defensa del Mar (Network of Indigenous Women for the Defense of the Sea) 🌊🪸🌿

The network brings together women from 11 territories and 5 indigenous cultures who share a deep relationship with the sea and a common commitment to its protection. Through their work, they defend coastal and marine areas from destruction, while strengthening both political and cultural resilience in their communities.

Their practice is about keeping the ocean as a living commons—through knowledge-sharing, the strengthening of local ways of life, and collective action across territories.

Objects made and sent by the women in the network, along with their own stories, are part of Minga for the Sea. 🌸🛶🐋

On August 7 at 6 pm, two members of the network will visit Kunstnernes Hus for a conversation about their work. The event is free and open to everyone—all are welcome.

Vi viser VM-finalen! Gratis inngang. Dørene åpner kl 20. Og vi holder åpent til kampen er ferdig.
Fram til kl 20 er det et annet arrangement inne på Huset, så det er ingen grunn til å dukke opp før det for å holde av stoler. Men kom gjerne tidlig og ta et glass ute i sola.

♻️🐑 Bevisst materialbruk og gjenbruk står sentralt i Cecilia Vicuñas praksis. Hun arbeider med lokale, funnede og gjenbrukte materialer, og lar materialets historie og minner fortsette å leve i nye former.

I Minga for havet hviler quipuene på gamle bomulls-fiskegarn fra 1940-tallet, funnet på nettet – spor fra et fiske som er erstattet av plast i dag, en av de største kildene til mikroplast i havet.

Den “samiske quipuen” hviler på krakker lånt fra Jannik Abel, laget av materialer fra tidligere utstillinger ved kunstinstitusjoner i Oslo. Krakkene var opprinnelig en del av samtaleprogrammet til Abels utstilling på huset, Back to the Land.

Ullen i begge quipuene er lokal norsk ull fra Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk.

Etter visningen på Kunstnernes Hus reiser installasjonen videre til @nordnorskkunstmuseum i Bodø.

Vi utforsker videre gjenbruk av materialene deretter, og tar gjerne imot innspill til ny bruk av ullen.

Conscious material use and reuse is central to Cecilia Vicuña’s practice. Working with local, found, and discarded materials, she lets material histories and memories continue in new forms.

In Minga for the Sea, the quipus rest on antique cotton fishing nets from the 1940s, found online. Today’s nets are made of plastic, a major source of marine microplastics.

The “Sami Quipu” rests on stools borrowed from Jannik Abel, themselves made from materials from past exhibitions at art institutions around Oslo, which were originally part of the talk program for Abel’s exhibition Back to the Land at Kunstnernes Hus.

The wool in both quipus is Norwegian wool from @hillesvagullvarefabrikk .

After its presentation at Kunstnernes Hus, the installation travels to @nordnorskkunstmuseum in Bodø.

We are exploring further reuse of the materials—and welcome ideas for new uses of the wool.

In this capsule, you are surrounded by lichen, neither a fungus or an algae- but both, a symbiotic being of two living as one. Birch branches covered in beard lichen are woven through wooden poles in the style of brakekledning, a wall building technique found in barns on Osterøy, the island I live on. The smell of the juniper branches would repel mice and the air would remain fresh for drying hay.

You’ll find two headphones hung on the wall, two bright yellow, turmeric dyed tote bags, small lichen sculptures on a shelf and drawings hung on the wall. These are all part of a workshop and a gathering that is not confined by time, it is there waiting for you whenever you are ready. Through the headphones you’ll hear an audio work, A Shared Organism, made by Mathilde Løkke Velvin and Martine Aadne Gulliksen that leads you through stories, thoughts and simple exercises to reflect together on identity, rest, and interconnectedness through the lens of neurodiversity and disability.

A Shared Organism is also not confined by place: if they idea of sitting still doesn’t feel right, you can ask at reception for a yellow tote bag where you will find the same tools for listening, drawing and sensing as you wander around the building, or find your own corner.

And the audio work is not confined to the building: you can find a link to a video version of A Shared Organism on the event page (link in bio).

This gathering is shaped by shared experience, it is a beautiful invitation to think of ourselves as part of a collective, even when there are barriers to our physical participation; it invites us to see ourselves as lichen: whole because of our complexity.
