Tried “Paqlay Surkrawar” from @pary.baban ‘s Kurdish cook book “Nandên”.

Broad beans are a typical street food in Sulaiymaniyah, I remember eating a different version near the bazaar when I was visiting years ago. Didn’t think of it at the time since there wasn’t a protein craze then but it was healthy protein on the go :). Pary’s version is tangy and I will definitely be making it again.

Kurdish breakfast at Nandine Vestry Rd last week. This time I went with another Kurdish friend and her Spanish husband. Both are foodies and loved the food, Spanish friend commented “Food was really tasty, fresh and clean. I wasn’t expecting that”.

Kurdish Restaurant Spotlight:
Nandine, London

Nandine has two locations in London, and we visited both, with two very different experiences.

Vestry Road location
We went for breakfast and tried several dishes, while sitting down with owner Pary Baban to talk about her motivation for opening Nandine, her views on Kurdish cuisine, and her book.
What really stood out was Pary’s passion for celebrating and preserving Kurdish culinary heritage. Through Nandine, she brings Kurdish food, traditions and stories to a wider audience, while keeping the richness and diversity of Kurdish cuisine at the heart of what she does.

📖 Pary Baban’s cookbook is available on Amazon. It contains many dishes she also serves in her restaurants. Check it out!

Camberwell Church Street location
For dinner, we enjoyed a lovely atmosphere and some seriously good Kurdish food. The dandok, stuffed Kurdish kifta, and tûzik salad (watercress) were the standouts, all absolutely delicious and highly recommended.
Two locations, two different experiences, but the same celebration of Kurdish culinary heritage.

🆕 Kurdish Restaurants Spotlight series 🆕

First up: Kurdish grill!

On a mission to find the absolute BEST Kurdish food in London we visited two Kurdish grill restaurants. Both were spot on and surprised us with the many traditional dishes they serve!

Spotlight 1: Al Sulaymaniyah restaurant
💚❤️💛 360 Edgeware Road 💚❤️💛

From Kurdish hospitality to the delicious stuffed veggies and lamb qozi... a great spot to eat and chat with the kind staff.

Spotlight 2: Nali Grill in Barking
💚❤️💛 41 Ripple Road 💚❤️💛

Salty and cold Mastav (dew, yoghurt drink) is served in copper cups, lovely and traditional. The freshness of the used ingredients really impressed me.
Advice: share some dishes so you can taste their broad range of flavours.
The tanûr bread is spot on!

On day 3 of our Kurdish food tour in London, we were still not very hungry from day 2 and also tired 🤭, so day 3 has one stop only.

For our last stop we decided on the other branch of Nandine’s since Pary Baban is on a league of her own and we wanted to try more of her creations. We were impressed once again.

This was our first Kurdish food tour, we enjoyed trying many restaurants, letting the wider community know of Kurdish cuisine and where you can eat it. Kurdish identity, including our food has been oppressed and denied. Like every group who grow and cook their food Kurds have their own unique cuisine, to deny this is ludicrous.

Last stop of Day 2 of London Kurdish Tour

For the non-Kurds “Hanar” means pomegranate in Kurdish.

Hanar was the perfect restaurant to end the day - really good drinks and food all in a beautiful setting. We all said we would come back and think you should try it out too.

Day 2, stop 2 of London Kurdish Food Tour

The menu at @yadas_green_kitchen was varied including many vegetarian and vegan options. We wanted to try many things but were not very hungry following on from stop 1 at @nandineuk for breakfast.

We liked what we tried and looking forward to going back to try the rest of the menu.
