Bringing Hades to life, capturing the awe and intimidation I felt as a young boy, was an incredibly fulfilling journey. I remember being both fascinated and a little frightened by his powerful presence and unforgettable performance. Recreating that energy in the artwork became a careful balance of menace and charisma. Was featured in @globalbc @globalnews mini segment about my art in the movie industry. It was such a cool experience. I want to say that the artworks in the movies I worked on require a massive team effort and couldn’t be done alone. Lots of super talented artists worked on these creatures to bring you what you see on the big screen. Ghidorah was mainly sculpted by @julien_romeo_art who knocked it out of the park. I helped out on the wings and chest due to time constraints on a last minute client note. The interview might come across as slightly misleading. by @kurtisdawe_creative

3 years ago today the first image of Pumbaa was released to the public. It was one of the best days of my life to see all our teams hard work. Working on Pumbaa was a dream come true. by @kurtisdawe_creative

Another render of my Frilled Wyvern.

Sculpted in ZBrush, @artbytravissmith textured in Mari and ZBrush, and rendered in Arnold and KeyShot. I also used Higgsfield during parts of the texturing process and to help integrate the creature into the background. Heaps of paint overs in photoshop.

Yes, I could have prompted this whole thing. But for me, it’s still important to sculpt. Partly because it gives me the control to get exactly what I want, but mostly because I genuinely love the process of sculpting.

We’re in a rapidly shifting creative world right now. Whether we like it or not. Money will make this gear turn and there will be nothing a raised pitchfork will do about it. We can adapt and explore these new tools, or we can choose to push back against them. I understand both sides, and I respect artists choosing either path.

The question that matters most to me is simply: “Can I be creative?”

Whatever path gives me the most freedom to create, experiment, and bring my ideas to life is the path I want to follow.

And the reality is, there’s A LOT in the traditional CG workflow that isn’t particularly creative. Over the years, I’ve worked on jobs where surprisingly little of my time was actually spent creating. A huge amount of it was grunt work, matching scans, technical problem-solving, and repetitive tasks.

So I’m interested in where all of this goes. I don’t want to abandon the parts of the process I love. I want to keep those, while embracing tools that can remove some of the parts I don’t.

For me, the goal isn’t to protect a particular workflow.

It’s to protect the ability to create.

DRAGON SHOWDOWN 🐉⚔️

Comment “DRAGON” and I’ll show you how I made the whole sequence, from the original creature designs to the final fight.

A battle to the death between two of my original creature designs: the Viper Drake and the Frilled Dragon.

Both creatures were designed and sculpted by me from the ground up, then brought to life using video generation in Seedance 2.5.

Seeing creatures I originally built as static 3D designs actually move, attack, react and fight each other like this is pretty wild.

Working at ILM gave me the incredible opportunity to be part of the live-action Moana, where I had the privilege of designing and sculpting several of the characters.

It’s important to remember that films like this are always the result of an enormous team effort, with so many talented artists and production teams working together. This was easily my favourite project during my time at ILM.

I was fortunate enough to design and sculpt Tamatoa, working closely with the supervisors and other departments to refine his look throughout production. A huge shoutout to my lead, @paulbraddock, who was an absolute pleasure to work with.

I also worked on Heihei alongside three other modelling artists, passing him between us as we tackled notes and refinements throughout the show. The Kakamora were another collaborative effort, shared between three of us.

On top of the character work, I also had the chance to contribute concept designs for Tamatoa, Heihei, and the Kakamora, which made the experience even more rewarding. #tamatoa #moana #zbrush #conceptart #monster by @kurtisdawe_creative
