Finance Internship Fits & Facts (FIFF) Pt 3 LEGOOOO

#1 - Fail fast 🚀
When you’re assigned the project that sounds like a foreign language, don’t run. Acknowledge what you don’t know, convert that fear into questions, and trace who in the org chart can get you answers. That beats saying “Yes, I got it!” and admitting three weeks later that you didn’t.

#2 - Reflection is your secret weapon 🔍
Your manager only has so much feedback to give in a 30-minute meeting. Some things about how you work only you know. Don’t wait to be told everything before you self-correct.

#3 - It’s not that deep 🤍
Performance matters. But when chasing it makes you anxious and restless, it has become your master. Some of my biggest mistakes came when I rushed to avoid being the bottleneck. Your team hired you because they trust you can learn, and learning means not knowing it all.

What’s the difference in these photos taken 6 years apart -

besides the shared, old family laptop in the first and my cute professional outfit in the second? 💻

Picture 1: I was a Nigerian-American 13-yo girl who just got into her dream boarding school on a full scholarship - a vision she worked and prayed tirelessly for.

Picture 2: Me, Day 1 of my FIRST finance / investing internship, about to make more money than I had ever made up until that point, after actively networking and applying for opportunities since high school.

But, what links these two photos?

In both, I knew I wanted to achieve something. BADLY. And I was willing to do what it took to get there.

Yes, I was older, wiser, and more in touch with my identity in Picture 2. Yes, I had outstanding support from my family, community, and mentors. 💡

Yet this very thing remained the same:

When you have a dream that feels novel and large, it can often feel scary. While this can be motivating, sometimes it makes you question, “Wait, am I the kind of person that can really achieve this?”

Let me break it to you. You ARE.

Not necessarily because you were born with all the skills necessary to, but because when you DECIDE to be that person, that is who you will be.

Because there are already gifts, talents, skills in your toolbox that God has equipped you with - your competitive advantage even as you build in your weak areas. ⭐️

You’ve got 15 minutes to receive and give as much value as you can from an expert in your industry.

What do you have to offer? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Ask the right questions.

Pay attention.

And right when the conversation is coming to an end (especially if they ask you “Does that make sense?”)…

It’s go time: “So from what I understand, this is how x y z works…”

If you really understood,

JACKPOT💰

If you don’t yet GET it, refine your questions and stay curious enough to GET it (whether in future chats or your own research).

Either way, discern with who and when to take the risk of trying to explain back what you just learned. Take a deep breath and let me know how it goes if you try it! 😆

You cannot fulfill someone else’s assignment better than they can, just as they cannot fulfill yours better than you. ❌

Staying in your lane (from a place of love, humility, and purpose) is biblical, and will bring you unfathomable peace.

Sometimes “The Ask” feels really difficult.

Especially when you’re the youngest in the room.

Especially when it’s front of a large crowd at a networking event.

Especially when the person or people have way more experience than you.

That is EXACTLY why you should ask.

Recognize that you are not just hindering yourself from learning if you do not ask

You are also hindering the person on the other end—the peer, the executive, the professor, the potential mentor—from the gratification of making a positive impact by sharing their story / work / life.

Your mouth holds the key to open the gate of unimaginable opportunity—for you and for others—if you would just push past the discomfort! 🔑
