In 2025, I became the Poet Laureate of El Segundo, California @elsegundocity later that year I was selected as a National Poet Laureate Fellow by the Academy of American Poets @poetsorg — it has been such a joy to curate programming that brings eco-poetry to my community. I hope you enjoy this poem from the 2025 @librarycongress National Book Festival. I’m so grateful for the continued support of the Academy, and the city of El Segundo. Shout out to the many, many villages that make this possible. We have an Earth Day Poetry event in El Segundo on April 18, pls follow my page or @el.segundo.public.library for all events/updates. Happy Spring 🌞🙏🏾 by @kwxku_

At long last, my book that has been five years in the making is NOW AVAILABLE for pre-order. Link in the bio. 🎉🎉🕺🏾🕺🏾SALTWATER DEMANDS A PSALM DROPS 4/4/23

This collection of poems interrogates black joy, rituals of dance, diasporic reconnection and black eternity. Special thanks to the many villages that made this work possible! I am forever indebted to @tyehimbajess, @graywolfpress, and @poetsorg for believing in my work 🙏🏽 by @kwxku_

Join us for Music and Poetry at Beyond Baroque! 🎶📖

The Sér Ensemble combines oud, violin, and guitar, exploring soundscapes where the Appalachian Mountains slope into the Mediterranean Sea. Helmed by composer, writer, and educator Raffi Joe Wartanian, the group—featuring guitarist Alexy Yeghikian & violinist Shant Tanielian––draws from Armenian folk, modal jazz, flamenco, rebetiko, and poetry, to create their unique compositions. “Sér,” meaning love in Armenian and to be in Spanish, reflects a guiding ethos: compositions as a container of both presence and relation, as in an unfolding practice of community, contemplation, and mutual care. The evening also features poet laureates from Los Angeles and adjacent cities, including Los Angeles Poet Laureate, Brian Sonia-Wallace; El Segundo Poet Laureate, Kweku Abimbola; and Glendale Poet Laureate, Tina Demirdjian. 🩷📚

Our 2026 Mbongi Week Open Mic Feature is @kwxku_ !

Born in the Gambia, Kweku Abimbola earned his MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan’s Helen Zell Writers’ Program. He is of Gambian, Ghanaian, Nigerian, and Sierra Leonean descent.

Abimbola’s first full-length poetry collection, Saltwater Demands a Psalm, was published by Graywolf Press in 2023. The début collection was selected by Tyehimba Jess to receive the Academy of American Poets’ First Book Award. In 2024, Saltwater also received a gold medal Florida Book Award, and the inaugural Nossrat Yassini Poetry Prize. His work interrogates the intersections of West African spirituality, ethnomusicology, cultural expression, and poetics to appreciate the legacies of Black literature on a global scale.

He has worked as a teaching artist for the Detroit-based literary nonprofit Inside Out Literary Arts and lectured in English and Creative Writing at the University of Michigan. Abimbola is an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at Loyola Marymount University. He is also the Poet Laureate of El Segundo, CA and a 2025 Academy of American Poets National Poet Laureate Fellow. by @kwxku_
