This is my omaโ€™s first class photo at the catholic girl school. After interviewing about her life, my mission was to record the locations in Surabaya she mentioned.

Sheโ€™s born in Banyuwangi within an Indo-European family during the Second World War. In the war the family was separated and the Japanese put them inside internment camps. Still after the Japanese surrender and Indonesiaโ€™s independence she lived in another camp in Jember, to be protected because Indo-Europeans were the target during the Indonesian revolution. Eventually, after being reunited with her mother, they settled in Surabaya, which was reoccupied by the Dutch. After years of no education, the only Dutch-language school available for her was the catholic Theresiaschool, even though she came from a protestant family. Her class had many Indo-European girls and the nuns were very strict!

After 1949, a lot Indo-European children would slowly leave Indonesia with their parents to their โ€˜vaderlandโ€™ which many never visited. But my oma stayed as her parents choose to become Indonesian citizen, because they see their country of birth as where they belong to. Thatโ€™s why my family is one of the few with Dutch blood (itโ€™s really a small %) who still live in Indonesia. My family doesnโ€™t share the same experience of the many Indo-Europeans coming to the Netherlands. Neither has my Moluccan side experienced the involuntary migration like the Moluccans in the Netherlands.

Yet, I emphatize with their history, even moreso knowing my ancestor from Saparua fought the Dutch along Pattimura in 1817. I discovered this history in many books after googling my opaโ€™s family name and the old Rp 1.000 bill carries great value for me because of its history. Oma has been here since my birth, while I only saw opa when visiting Indonesia. taken in Sdk Santa Theresia.... by @ky.kale

โ„™๐•๐•’๐•ซ๐•’ ๐•Š๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•’๐•“๐•’๐•ช๐•’ is where the ๐‚๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐ž๐ซ๐ณ๐ข๐ž๐ค๐ž๐ง๐ก๐ฎ๐ข๐ฌ was located, or the Central Civilian Hospital. I brought this photo from 1934, which is from my opa when he worked at the hospital. I didnโ€™t know much about this photo, except that the man sitting all the way in the right is the famous doctor Soetomo. Soetomo is the founder of the Budi Utomo, the first Indonesian nationalist movement. The founding year, 1908, marks the start of Indonesian Nationalism.

He spent his life in Surabaya, working at the hospital and he also founded the Gedung Nasional Indonesia in 1930, as a meeting place for Indonesians. The building is still in use and has a museum dedicated to him. Here, I tried to learn more about his live and discovered that the man sitting left of the faceless woman is dr. Soetopo and next to him is dr. Hidajat!(Special thanks to @rizky_jovan & @wiharjotan for the research)

I like history because of discoveries like these, where a door opens to a hidden past. Yet, a lot remains unknown because my dad doesnโ€™t known much about opaโ€™s time in Surabaya. We know that heโ€™s from the Sangir islands, travelled to Luwuk, Manado and ended up in Jakarta, where he worked at the Cikini hospital. He died in 1969 and Iโ€™ve never seen his grave at Menteng Pulo until now. The search for his grave was quite difficult, walking back and forth between graves. But after finding it, it felt like a discovery and another door opening a hidden past. taken in Delta Plaza Surabaya by @ky.kale

In 1926 a building was opened in Amsterdam for a company that relied on the former colonies in Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ and Suriname ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ท. The company, Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij, had a very prominent location at the Vijzelstraat and a large role in the Dutch economy. It has become what is now the ABN AMRO bank.

This year the city archive reflects on this colonial past and the unheard stories behind it.

My video is in an exhibition in @museumsophiahof for educating children on the colonial history with Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ and its legacy in the Netherlands ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

I talk about the colonial imagery on @wereldmuseum.amsterdam with @alisanoabee . 2 years ago we walked along the Sumatrastraat to show children how you can find Indonesia on the street. This was for the educational videos @indischherinneringscentrum made together with @malsmedia

โ€œChildren need mirrors and windows. Mirrors to see themselves and windows to see how others are and liveโ€ (a quote based on that of @dawnonsocial )

The current building of @wereldmuseum.amsterdam was opened 100 years ago in 1926 as the colonial institute of the tropics. On its facade different types of plantations can be seen such as a tobacco plantation I highlight.

Javastraat can be found in cities like Den Haag, Amsterdam, Delft, Groningen, Haarlem, Utrecht and more. They were a sign of the growing territory of the Dutch empire and colonial conquest.

Think you know Amsterdam? Think againโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

Thereโ€™s a whole side of the city connected to The Dutch East Indies history that many visitors walk right past without even realizing it.

My INDOnesian friend Rizky aka @Ky.kale is the perfect person to guide you through Amsterdamโ€™s neighborhoods, pointing out historic buildings, architecture and the stories behind them that connect The Netherlands with The Dutch East Indies.

If youโ€™re visiting Amsterdam and want to discover more than just the usual tourist spots, I highly recommend reaching out to Rizky.

See Amsterdam through a different lens and discover the history thatโ€™s still all around us. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉโค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ#socalindo #dutcheastindies #hindiabelanda #amsterdam by @ky.kale

Coming weeks I have a new position presenting this beautiful tapestry designed by @marcoslah for @dvons.nl โ€œThreads of Our Dutch Slavery Pastโ€ inside @chocoladefabriekgouda

Iโ€™m really honoured to educate people on the history between the Netherlands, Indonesia, Suriname and the Caribbean Islands through art. This design flips the controversial colonial artwork from the royal โ€˜Golden Coachโ€™ by having people from those communities working on this tapestry. The small but significant cultural touches are batik, pangi, kotomisi, cloves and kauri shells.

Come to see it close up and visit in Gouda when Iโ€™m there! by @ky.kale

I met people from Indonesian, with roots from Indonesia and many different countries. A way for me to get people connected with each other, Indonesia, the city and their history!
