I’ve been mostly subbing since the school year started, and while I love my day being dynamic and getting to know all of the kids and their abilities, I’ve missed just getting to sit down with a class, give a creative lesson, and watch them go. Today was totally on the fly. But we read Leaf Man, gathered leaves, and they made some really cool art inspired by the book.

Next, we took all of the pumpkins we could find in the room and made a Sensorial work with them: putting them in order from the largest to the smallest. There are materials designed for this (the Broad Stairs and Tower of Cubes), the sole purpose of which is to help children develop their Mathematical Mind and satisfy their need for order. But taking everyday objects and doing the same thing as a group helps them develop a more abstract understanding of the lesson. The Sensorial materials are designed to help children categorize and understand the world around them, and they proved that they could. by @ky2dee2

The Leaves don’t actually “change” in the Fall.

Chlorophyll breaks down as days become shorter,
Nutrients and pigment retreating with the sun.
Amber and scarlet sleeping just beneath the surface,
The smiling green nature’s best facade.

Maybe this is why the melancholy love Autumn.
Maybe it just understands. by @ky2dee2

A friend of mine suggested that I do something for myself today to combat the brain gremlins. So, to celebrate completing a project, I took a drive through the cemetery.

**Caption changed because I thought this was a weeping willow, but when I looked closely, those are not willow leaves. It’s a weeping beech tree! I had no idea those existed!

Still check out willow symbolism on Victorian graves though, if you’re curious. It’s fascinating.

There’s so much symbolism on this treestone. If anyone is interested, just let me know in the comments. I’ll spare you from the info dump otherwise.

Also, I think the carver’s name is in the stone? Don’t quote me. Need to research.

Okay, I know what I said, but this one is incredible and a bit unsettling. There’s a lot of religious symbolism here. (The obelisk is literally giving directions. “Go up, man!”) But the wreath and veil are both off center, leaning to the right. This usually means something has been left incomplete. Unfinished business?? I’m about to get nosey about a 200 year old grave.

Rose of Sharon 💜

There is so much happening here and I have zero clue what to tell you. But it looked very cool. Will update anyone interested after more research.

Just a little family plot surrounded by pink trees. 💜

I’m coming up on year 3 at my dream job, and I thought I’d share some of my favorite lessons with you. It’s been a long and beautiful journey getting here. But I’m so grateful to have finally found an education path that celebrates the capabilities of children beyond their test scores. These lessons are all designed for 2.5-6 year olds, an age group that people basically write off as babies. But I see on a daily basis the incredible things they can do. Amazing what a little trust can do. by @ky2dee2

Hey, pals.

I’ve genuinely missed doing Friz Gigs so much, so I’m opening up bookings again! Mostly just doing remote things right now, but I have also done experiment days and readings for libraries, schools, and birthday parties.

Background: I was The Friz for Halloween one year (my students at the time helped me paint my dress, so even though it looks less than perfect, I’ll never replace it). A friend of mine asked me to come to her classroom as Ms. Frizzle, and then other schools and libraries asked. When the pandemic hit, I did virtual Storytime and Friday Fun Days to give kids stuck at home something to do, and it kind of took off from there.

If you’d like a virtual reading or birthday greeting, the link tree with booking and price info (super affordable. The most expensive is a full Storytime or experiment for $30) will go up on 6/16.

Don’t forget to take chances, make mistakes, and get messy! by @ky2dee2

A little late, but Happy World Goth Day, friends.

Here’s a baby bat Kyla. I could post a spooky pic, but this is more honest: Dressed in flowers, pocket full of cool rocks, throwing up a peace sign, about to do something ill advised, was probably watching either Dark Crystal or Nightmare Before Christmas before going on a surprise adventure… basically, not much has changed in 30 years.

Here’s to celebrating our spooky little journeys, friends. 💜 by @ky2dee2

Teacher Appreciation Week reflection:

I have the best job in the world. Preschoolers are all so brilliant and weird and silly, and no one has made them feel like they should be otherwise. They are always sweet, always speak their mind… and honestly, no one is more metal than the average five year old.

Please enjoy a collection of kiddo quotes. by @ky2dee2
