Love Is Everything ---

Oh, love. The emotion that can evoke limitless energy and optimism, but also despair and emotional pain. When love turns from elation to dejection, we bathe in regret. We punish ourselves for being blind. For not having better judgment skills. What a shame. Isn’t it enough that we ache? What good can come from thrashing our already shredded hearts?

Regret is a futile emotion. Is flopping around in a puddle of self-imposed chastisement going to make what happened to go away? If we could go back and change the past, would those changes truly positively alter our lives? There’s no way to know. So best to accept what was, and move along.

Love gives us moments of exquisiteness - even unrequited love! Our senses heighten, our spirits soar, and nothing seems undoable. No wonder love can be compared to a drug. Some among us endlessly seek its heady elixir. Can we be blamed? I think not. It’s a fabulous feeling, something to be savored with relish. Romantic love is a wondrous thing and worth whatever it costs to have enjoyed it.

I’ve loved singularly, and been left to pick up the pieces of my broken heart more than once. And I’ve been loved and taxed with the unsavory chore of breaking away. When love doesn’t work out, it hurts. And — I’ve had to blow on many fading embers to keep love alive. There is a glorious sense of achievement in successfully breathing new life into a dying love.

Romantic love is always dicey. Our brain chemistry is altered at the start. We can not sustain the level of dopamine that floods our brain when attraction first hits. When reality sets in, two people have to decide if they can exist together once their usual selves return.

But if they can’t? Should they be sorry for the time they shared a path? Realizing different paths are ahead shouldn’t mean the footsteps left behind were missteps. Be glad you had another beating heart to walk alongside for the duration of the journey you shared. Because love is everything. by @ky2fl2015
