After a pop idol pivots her career to acting, the pressures of the entertainment industry cause Mima to lose her grasp on reality and her memories, eventually making her a suspect in a series of murders.

Perfect Blue captures the underlying and overt struggles of a woman in the entertainment industry through Mima as she navigates her career as an actress while discovering herself under a lens of misogyny.

This exploitation is only made worse by the tragedy that Mima's identity is constantly distorted by the camera and the public for their own consumption. The result is one of the most unsettling portrayals of the blurred line between the characters we play and our own identity.

Satoshi Kon portrays Mima's struggle through seamless transitions between the many roles she plays on camera, on stage, and at home. The subtle shifts between these different versions of herself and the different performances of femininity create a feverish, dreamlike quality that leaves both Mima and the audience questioning what is real.

Perfect Blue is an animation masterpiece that tells a multilayered story about a woman's identity being distorted and defined by the eyes that look upon her, as well as the ones within herself.

The most technologically advanced city in the world is home to both humans and robots.

Metropolis (2001) is an anime adaptation based on Osamu Tezuka's manga adaptation of the original film from 1927 that goes by the same name. Not only is Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy behind this film, but Metropolis (2001) is also written by Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of Akira. Two of the most influential anime and manga creators of all time.

The systemic oppression of advanced robots has become a ticking time bomb that grows louder behind Metropolis' chants of progress and humanity. The fate of the city lies in the hands of a group of detectives composed of both men and machines as they uncover the mystery behind the Ziggurat, a construct believed to control the entirety of Metropolis.

A labyrinth of light

Trapped in blinding neon walls

I hear the exit.

A conversation.

A melodious humming.

A melodic whirr.

In a world of magic, whenever someone needs a package delivered, they turn to a witch. Despite Kiki being a delivery witch, there is a limit to magic. After pushing herself too hard on the job, she exhausts her abilities to the point of failure. To get back on her broom, she must rediscover what made her fly in the first place.

Kiki's Delivery Service is special to me because it feels like a letter to artists about creative burnout and finding the path back to making art after a block. Sometimes that path requires taking a break and experimenting with new ideas before you can get back on track.

I also think Jiji is really fun, and the sense of freedom in flight that Ghibli always manages to capture makes Kiki's Delivery Service one of their best films.

Here is Kiki catching that second wind beneath her broom.

A weather-manipulating girl and a boy with several rain clouds hanging over his head. Weathering with You is a story about miracles and the magnitude of the consequences that come with them.

Set in a Tokyo that has endured relentless rain for what feels like an eternity, Hodaka discovers a girl named Hina who possesses the ability to make the rain disappear. As the two grow closer on their mission to bring sunshine back into people's lives, Hodaka uncovers an unsettling truth about Hina's power and the origins behind it. Faced with an impossible choice, he must decide between the girl he loves and the fate of the world itself.

There is an innate power behind every miracle, especially those born of the supernatural. But power does not come from nowhere. Every shift in the balance carries a price, even when its intentions are as benevolent as bringing a few more sunny days to a rain-soaked city.

After all, what is a sunny day worth without the one person you would want to share it with?

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is, in many ways, a story about a prisoner. Not one trapped behind bars, but one confined by her own divinity. From the moment she was born, her fate had already been written in stone as the heir to the divine royalty of the moon. Despite having eternity before her, her greatest wish is simply to experience the fleeting beauty of Earth and live as a mortal human.

Princess Kaguya is reborn on Earth from a glowing bamboo shoot and adopted by a humble farmer and his wife. Kaguya brings blessings wherever she goes, from the gold and silk gifted by her celestial origins to the joy she brings her new family. Through these blessings, the family rises into earthly nobility, but at the cost of Kaguya’s freedom and the peaceful countryside life she once cherished.

Surrounded by luxury, expectation, and status, she becomes a prisoner once again, slowly remembering why she abandoned the moon in the first place.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is ultimately a story of self-discovery and the search for freedom beyond expectations. brought to life through breathtaking watercolor imagery that feels as delicate and fleeting as the life she dreamed of on the moon.

Leaping across moss

Sunlight falls between the trees

A quiet humming stream

Silk on silk on skin

Whispers cut like sharpened blades

The moon is blinding

Mindgame is an existential trip that takes us down several roads of possible unlived lives, begging the question of how things could’ve been had we made that one decision.

Nishi, an aspiring manga artist, is given a second chance at life after a fatal accident. This time, he must dig deep within himself to reveal his true self while facing a series of trials that test whether he’s courageous enough to truly cherish life.

This movie is boundless in its animation, using surrealism as a tool to bring subconscious thoughts into reality. The energetic animation and high-speed action sequences give Mindgame a feverish, dreamlike quality that constantly shifts between absurdity and self-discovery.

Check out Mindgame if you want your mind blown.

A blending of senses and identities.

Totsuko is a student at a Catholic high school with the ability to see the “colors” within people as reflections of their personalities and emotions. When she discovers a girl named Kimi in a bookshop, a friendship is sparked through their shared interest in starting a band. They later meet a boy named Rui, and together form a trio band that practices at an abandoned church.

The beauty of The Color Within is that it isn't black and white, and that idea shines through in the way the characters navigate their colorful personalities within the traditionally conforming nature of a Japanese catholic school. Each character faces the dilemma of how they can remain part of the collective while still being true to themselves as individuals. The conflict does not settle with a dramatic separation from their respective homes, but rather explores the emotional desire to be accepted for who they are while continuing to exist within that shared space.

This is further reflected in the band practicing inside the abandoned church itself. A church is given new life through a group of teenagers searching for a place where they can freely practice their music without judgment, while still remaining rooted in their faith.

Through Totsuko’s exploration of the hidden rainbow within the friends she meets, The Color Within cleverly tells an underlying story about the complex relationship between queerness and the traditional, conforming nature of a Japanese Catholic school.

Exploring identity as something colorful, truthful, and worthy of being valued.
