YOUR LOVE = MY LIFE is a world i’ve been waiting to create for what seems like my whole life 💫

After being commissioned by @brightersound to make a new piece of music that explores east and south east asian archives, i took it upon myself to use this time to create something that not only tells a story but tells MY story - well, at least a part of it anyway. A live animated musical inspired by how my parents met in Japan was a lot harder to make than I imagined but I was up for the challenge to make this 15 minute piece come to life over 3 months. A lot of time at the studio and at home, exploring new things i’ve never tried before!

Bringing my multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary practice to life with this piece has been an experience I can’t quite put into words. I think I might still be processing it (I was sick for 10ish days after the show 😅). I’m hoping to bring the next and bigger version of this show on to the stage next year, alongside a few other cool new things I’m working on.

the first manchester mahjong music club was a success!!! i’m so so happy that all of these people came to learn to play mahjong and listen to some of the best selections of @esea_music ! most everyone was playing mahjong for the first time 🥹

i actually have two studio spaces in my house but this is where i make/record music and make digital art things!! autumn is upon us so you know the cozy vibes are essential for those of us that will not emerge until spring, so i decided to give the studio a lil face lift today. i spend up to 14 hours a day (i know 😭) in here so it really has to be perfect for me. this is the best setup since we moved in in february but knowing me, i will switch it up again in a few months 🌱

Buckle up as my sudden hyper focus has led to a dedicated ESEA Heritage Month podcast, showcasing the folks who are organising events around the country (60+ and counting 😮). Chaotic good (enough) is a continuation of the book I co-wrote, Beyond Belonging. It’s about admitting we haven’t got it figured out but exercising interdependence and advocacy in a turbulent world that seeks to tire us out.

This week I’m chatting with @kyami_world - a New York-born, UK-based interdisciplinary artist working across music, design and creative technology.

Today we are chatting about Kyami’s event for ESEA Heritage Month, Mahjong Music Club in Manchester, their inspiration behind holding it and why you should go. We celebrate the importance of third spaces, give libraries their flowers and discuss @counterpointsarts “Protocol of Care” when facilitating events. We talk about intergenerational connection and Kyami’s experiences inviting the elders into social spaces.
