POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
There are two stories unfolding in French Ending, an exhibition by @kyborgi at @this_______________________ gallery. The story held within the words and illustrations, and the story of how the work itself came to be, shaped through collaboration, translation, and the meeting of different perspectives.

I was especially drawn to the collaged pieces, where separate elements come together so seamlessly that the process almost disappears. I nearly missed one example of this entirely, which made discovering it all the more rewarding.

What I loved most about French Ending is the way it leaves space for the viewer to participate, to bring their own experiences and interpretations to what is being shared. Much like language itself, the work feels open to translation, both literal and personal.

A warm and welcoming exhibition that reminds us how stories can connect us, even when words fall short, and how sometimes the most meaningful endings are the ones we get to create ourselves.

The Show runs until October 18

Join us Saturday, October 10 for the opening reception for French Ending a new book written and illustrated by Kyla Bourgh.

The title French Ending alludes to the concept used in cinema and literature. Unlike the closed resolutions typical of an “American Ending,” the “French Ending” functions as a narrative strategy that invites the audience to complete the ending of the work from their own experience and interpretation. The book’s theme setting of France, a collaboration between Kyla Bourgh (Vancouver, Canada) and Viviana Maidanik (Buenos Aires, Argentina) presents the multi-faceted process that happened worlds apart, yet remains connected and cohesive.

This concept aligns directly with the multi-lingual book, which conceives writing, art and translation as open practices in constant dialogue with each other. Illustrations add another layer of hints towards unspoken narrative and visual expression. The book compiles illustrations and a series of meta-narrative stories written by Bourgh. In these stories, the author explores the experience of living in a country where only partial mastery of the local language generates estrangement and a sense of identity displacement. From her English-speaking perspective, a language often considered “universal” within the framework of cultural globalization, she reflects on the impossibility of fully expressing herself, to her artistic peers, the discomfort of not recognizing her own words, and, simultaneously, the powerful bonds formed despite fragmented language.

French Ending
October 9–18, 2026

French Ending is an exhibition and bilingual book project by Vancouver artist and writer Kyla Bourgh, created in collaboration with Buenos Aires-based publisher and designer Viviana Maidanik, with French translations by Antonio Werli.

Bringing together Bourgh’s original conté illustrations, writing, and the collaborative process behind the publication, French Ending explores what happens when language is incomplete. Drawing from Bourgh’s experience of living in a country where she had only a partial command of the local language, the project considers estrangement, identity, misunderstanding, and the meaningful connections that can form despite the limits of words.

The title refers to a narrative convention that leaves a story unresolved, inviting the audience to complete it through their own experience and interpretation. In French Ending, that openness extends across writing, illustration, translation, and collaboration.
