I never had a dog growing up. After a frightening experience at five, I spent years terrified of dogs and never wanted one of my own.

Then came Russ.

In 2014, my father-in-law brought home a golden retriever puppy to keep their miniature schnauzer company. They were the same size for about three weeks. Lol.

Before long, he was a 90-pound golden retriever who needed more room and attention. Riley was nine, Bryson was six, and although I thought our family was complete, something was missing.

We brought Rusty home for a trial weekend when he was about eight months old. He never left.

He fit right in and never met a stranger. He loved barking at the neighbors’ dogs and sprinting down the cul-de-sac to visit his buddies at the Thornburgs’.

He never cared much about fetching or playing ball like Teddy. Russ preferred chewing on a good stick and getting a good chin rub.

He was an old soul. I always pictured him sneaking into the basement while we were gone, pouring himself some 22-year-old Blade and Bow from the 2022 state championship celebration, lighting one of my cigars and jamming to music on the Bluetooth speaker.

Meanwhile, Teddy was probably hanging from the ceiling fan.

They were complete opposites, but man, did they hit it off. I know Teddy is going to miss him too.

Russ loved playing in the creek and sitting on the porch with me, watching storms roll in. He loved our neighbors’ kids as much as ours—especially after Riley and Bryson got older and began moving on.

I realized recently that Russ had been with us for my entire time coaching the girls’ soccer team. That means yesterday’s 1–0 win over Assumption was the last time I would come home from a game and be greeted by my buddy.

I’ll miss yelling, “RUSS!” and answering for him, “Right here, Dad!” I’ll miss asking him every morning, “Rusty, are you still in the Navy?”

The last few weeks were hard, but we all had the chance to say goodbye.

I’ll forever be grateful that he completed our family and was there throughout my children’s childhood.

He was their dog.

He was my buddy.

So, if you’re into that kind of thing, raise a glass today for my main man, Russ. by @kyhotbrowns

After all these years (16) in Room 103, I’m officially packing things up and temporarily moving across the hall to Room 102 while construction continues on the new classroom project.

And honestly… it’s hard to put into words what Room 103 has meant.

This room has seen AP Government debates, U.S. History stories, World Civ discussions, Current Events conversations, and Social Media projects come to life.

It’s been a classroom, film room, meeting room, locker room, team dining hall, therapy office, comedy club, and second home all rolled into one.

We’ve watched game film in there before huge matches.
Had team meals spread across every desk in the room.
Celebrated wins.
Sat through heartbreak after losses.
Laughed until we couldn’t breathe.
And had moments that reminded us school is about way more than grades and tests.

Thousands of students have walked through Room 103 over the years.
And somehow every class, every team, and every group left a little piece of themselves behind.

Now for a little while, we head to Room 102 until the new space is ready.

Different room. Same people. Same energy. Same memories still being made. 💚🐉 #ΣΟΕ by @kyhotbrowns
