just a chronically dehydrated critter with a camera (and a literature degree I still use while photographing elopements, a film habit since 2003, and a strong opinion that the The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers extended edition (obviously) is the greatest film ever made)

(feel free to argue about that in the comments)

(let this serve as a PSA that I am actively looking for couples who want a LOTR themed wedding or elopement)

19/10 babbling brook at the end 🤌🏼

I miss when they were small like this. Tiny moments expanded into what felt like a whole universe of experience. A simple walk from camp to the creek felt like an adventure.

People sometimes talk about the scaling down of adventure when you have kids like it’s a huge downgrade. And maybe it is, for some. For me, it felt like a paradigm shift, and the gentlest invitation to take in the world with a new sense of wonder.

Things feel small if you stay in your world. But things feel enormous if you enter theirs. ⋆⭒˚.⋆ by @kykhalil_

What better way to celebrate thirteen years with my most loyal trailmate than a romp in our favorite place on earth?

I don’t know how many more trips out here we’re going to get together. I do know that I hope to be surprised by the number, and that I want to remember everything. The way his one white paw turns orange after a few hours here. The way the sand brushes off his back. The way he looks like he was made to be here. I’ve wanted to immortalize us, and our favorite way of being together, for all thirteen years we’ve been together.

It used to be that I didn’t think my life mattered enough to be documented. But in time, summoned by wisdom and intuition, I drew deep lines, long in the sand, and opened my palms to let the voices casting doubt on my dignity and humanity be taken by the wind. I learned to speak to myself the way I would speak to *quite literally* anyone else. And in doing so, I learned to love. I hope my daughters memorize the way I did it.

There is no love like a dog’s. And this dog has loved me, unfailingly, consistently, every single day since the day that I met him, mangey tail wagging at the rescue gate. Our life didn’t end up looking quite the way I’d promised him all those years ago. But he has been by my side and so patient with me as I stumbled through the wilderness, and he’s as ready as ever to let ‘er rip now that we’re back on trail.

This chapter of our lives holds as much promise, adventure, and excitement as our lives did at the beginning of our journey together thirteen years ago; I want to get high on every detail, especially with him, especially here. And when it came to knowing who would do all of this justice, the choice was unbelievably easy for me to make. There is nothing like a buddy who deeply gets it, and goes hard behind the lens. @abbihearne — thank you 🥹

No one on this earth should be made to feel alone, invisible, or disposable. May those who love us when we are gone cherish the art we make in the recognition that our existence here matters. And may the traces we leave behind us be made in refusal of erasure, in tenderness for those we must protect, and in reverence for the dignity of all living beings. taken in Moab, Utah by @kykhalil_

I recently walked a hundred miles through France, Italy, and Switzerland around Mont Blanc with my dad. It’s rare and precious to get this much quality time with a parent as an adult, and as a parent myself. I would be so lucky to have this kind of experience with my girls when they’re my age and I’ll never forget how lucky I am to have a parent who was willing, able, and available to do this with me.

I knew the Tour du Mont Blanc would be good, but it somehow managed to blow past every single expectation I had, and it surprised me in ways I could never have expected. Not only because I needed a really long walk after the last few years, but because on that walk I got to meet people I never thought I would, and got to welcome back parts of myself I thought I’d never see again. All in a setting with the kind of beauty that really earns the word breathtaking.

I walked all one hundred miles with the big camera in hand or holstered on my shoulder. I knew I’d have to do that, because the second the rig goes in the backpack, it’s too easy to settle for the low hanging fruit quickly captured with an iPhone in hand. As a result, I ended up with hundreds of juicy frames immortalizing the wild drama and pure cinema of the Alps. The sore shoulder was a small price to pay for all the joy of turning a hundred miles of walking and memories into something I can hold onto.

I’ll be sharing the moments I carried home from the Alps over the next few weeks. This is only the beginning <3 taken in Tour du Mont Blanc by @kykhalil_
