Regular Route of the Third Pillar of Dana (5.10) with @timothygnarlson As a new climber and even newer trad leader, I often find myself searching for the safe, moderate, predictable outcomes. Routes I’ve done before, or ones that are well within my comfort level. We were planning a few day climbing trip, my suggestions were in the 5.5-5.8 range of difficulty; comfortable and relaxed. So, when Timothy asked if I was up for the Third Pillar of Dana, a route pushing my skill level in an area I’d never set foot in, let alone climbed in, I said yes.Hours after our pre-dawn embarkment, we got our first glimpse of the third pillar, in our eyes a granite obelisk the mountain men of legend climb. We got our gear ready, and descending the gully with rockfall detonating and splintering around us we knew the day would be something memorable. But, as we arrived the two kids from the gas station were starting up, so how hard could it really be? Hours later, and several dozen murmurs of “watch me, dude, this next move is scary” over the walkie-talkies, we pushed to the top where marmots graciously watched over our beers keeping them safe for us.Thanks for leading the scary pitch @timothygnarlson and pushing me out of my comfort zone. To celebrate we climbed a Warren Harding Tuolumne Classic after, in true mountain man spirit. by @kyle.afk

🇪🇸🇸🇰🇷🇴 | Spain, Slovakia, Romania, a little climbing trifecta. Last year I went to North Macedonia and met Dario, a local climber, guide, developer and overall stellar person. Later in the year, we met again in Spain, climbing at the slab paradise of La Pedriza where the holds are made up and the hands don’t matter. A week of balancy, delicate climbing with the end of a nail for holds. Surrounded by goats, we climb. @dario.milossevich From Spain to Slovakia, climbing on mountains adorned with the ruins of castles. The scene was beautiful, a fortress crag with snowfall around us, but being able to feel your fingers is generally a plus when climbing. On the plus side, there is a reward of warm mulled wine and Christmas markets afterwards. Thanks for showing me around the crag @elenavascisinova Romania. Whatever image you have of it is so spot on and so wrong. One of the gems of the trip. My time here was filled with some of my favorite climbing of all time. From Multipitch to dry tooling, Romania delivered. Superb, moderate climbing pitch after pitch with @al_paun by @kyle.afk

Gorlami. Italy and Slovenia plus the fun bits in between: Vatican & San Marino. 🇮🇹 🇸🇮 🇸🇲 🇻🇦 So, first off I was wrong about Rome. I had always heard from seasoned travelers to avoid Rome, and that everything from the food to the people and attractions were a letdown. They were all wrong and so was I for believing that. Carbonara is the best thing. Every restaurant I went to I saw a wonderful menu full of variety and ample Mediterranean options, and I would choose the carbonara in .5 seconds without a second thought. This was the correct choice. Go to Rome, the only city where menus are useless because the correct option is carbonara. Oh, Venice and Florence and all of Tuscany were lovely too. Sorry for the lack of winery pictures, I was preoccupied eating little cubes of cheese. Italian hostels 11/10.The Vatican is gold, very gold. How much gold? You have an idea in your head of how much gold is there, now double it. You’re still wrong, it’s more. Take the tour.SAN MARINO. Have I mentioned how much I love castles on mountains? It really hits the spot. I imagine if anyone from Florida came to San Marino they would be so impressed to see a castle on a mountain, but wait there’s more. If you turn around there’s ANOTHER castle on ANOTHER mountain. And beyond that? Yup. Another castle. Another mountain. Oh and it’s all one big rock climbing crag, so have fun. 🧗‍♂️ Slovenia is underrated. Also, mountains on the flag? Of course I love this place. Ljubljana, Bled, it’s all amazing. A place I will absolutely return to - The Julian Alps are a thing of beauty. So, idk book the ticket or something. Travel alone, buy strangers drinks and ask others to join you on random trips to see silly things.(Slowly catching up on old travel pictures, only ~6 months behind now) by @kyle.afk
