Found an old roll of @cinestillfilm 400D from last September. You never really get used to how much can change in one year especially when it gets laid out for you so immediately like a roll of film can. Im not really sure what this post is about but I suppose it’s making a grid post to tell yall how much I love ya and how inspired I am by how talented you are. I love seeing your little victories no matter how small you think they are. If it helps me keep going in this industry, it’s definitely helping someone else. “Last Stand at Butte City” was shot on location in Montana by DP Kyle Deitz. Fresh off a screening at the 22nd Annual HollyShorts Film Festival, here’s what Kyle had to say about working with the ALEXA 35.

“One of the most challenging aspects of shooting a western, in my opinion, is the extreme contrast. Filming in Montana meant dealing with the bright, sprawling sky and the immediate dense contrast where the dark treelines of the mountains met it. The ALEXA 35 allowed us to pull it off because of its immense dynamic range. This versatility meant we were never afraid of losing information, allowing us to frame the exact shot we wanted, regardless of how harsh the background was. We could work without large lights on our exteriors to maintain a natural feel with subtle bounces because we knew we could enhance the shadows in post with plenty of latitude. And our interiors could accurately reflect the time period; moody, contrasty, and not supplemented by an omniscient top light. Coupling the 35 with the Atlas Silver Edition anamorphics (also provided by ARRI NY) really brought everything together. Their natural flares and enhanced focus roll-off rendered an organic and lived-in image. We also shot with the ARRI Nostalgic Texture to add that last little bit of subtle grit to the image. I felt we had a 90% completed image when it came time to color which is a crazy feeling in the world of indie filmmaking. We handed off to one of my favorite collaborators colorist Nick Metcalf who really took the whole thing over the finish line for us with an incredible grade. I think we ended up with a very striking film that punches well above its weight and I don’t think we would have yielded the same results with a different system. This is what a filmmaker wants. As soon as your equipment gets in the way of capturing your film, you are using the wrong tools. This is the experience I’ve only had when shooting on the 35 and yet again it was one of the most freeing sets I have been on.”

This job was a different challenge from what I’m used to. For this project for @indeedworks and @jennyslate we did a live multicam shoot. Client wanted a late night show with a little seasoning and I think we made that look happen.

🌅Last Stand At Butte City🌅

“This is a story about self-isolation through reaction to trauma and what that can do to a person as well as their surrounding community. There are several flashback sequences throughout the film where the main character is recollecting her trauma. During these sequences, I wanted to utilize the more reactive coatings on the Silver Editions to catch veiling glare mixed with traditional lense flares coming through the windows of the main character’s cabin. This creates this stunning smearing effect that happens entirely in camera. To me this embodies the fuzziness that comes when trying to piece together traumatic events in your head. It all combines to create this very dreamy, but somehow still very grounded image. Outside of this specific effect we were going for, the enhanced focus fall off that has been engineered into this set vs the base Orion set is really pleasing. It was a noticeable difference too in my testing. It rolls off much more gradually than the base set of orions. We approached a lot of the flashbacks with a handheld camera and had many takes where we wanted to go from a medium wide to an extreme close up. The close focus of these lenses helped greatly for us to accomplish that without the need for a diopter or cut while we were losing the light. I have struggled over the years finding anamorphics that hold lots of character, but not to the point of the image falling completely apart. I never even really knew what I wanted exactly until I saw it. And I really see it in the Silver Editions specifically. I’ll definitely be reaching for these lenses for years to come.” - @kyledeitz
