POSTS STORIES REELS

When Real Friends first started writing demos, even before we had a band name, Dave would title each demo file with the date we were working on it. The very first song we ever wrote together in 2010 was named “October 15th.” That demo would eventually become “A Little Too Nice,” the opening track on our very first EP, “This Is Honesty.” So yeah, October 15th, which is today, has always meant a lot to me.

I look back on those beginning stages of the band fondly. I was in my early twenties, thinking I knew it all, bitter about past bands that didn’t work out. I used to say Real Friends was my last swing at doing this whole band thing. I remember giving up on trying to get signed, find a manager, and reach all those music business milestones I’d dreamed of. With my old bands, I’d cold-email managers, labels, and agents with little to no response. There was something freeing about not worrying about that stuff anymore. Real Friends felt special to me early on because it meant going back to doing it for fun, because it was what made me feel alive. Looking back, it was such a healing chapter in my life.

“This Is Honesty” wasn’t exactly a celebrated release. We played about 10 local shows before deciding to stop everything, regroup, and go in a different direction that felt more genuine to us. That direction led to “Everyone That Dragged You Here,” the EP that truly sparked everything for RF. But without “This Is Honesty,” there is no ETDYH. And without ETDYH, there is no RF. Bringing it back my original point, without October 15th, 2010, there is none of the above. That first song was the seed of something greater than we ever imagined.

And another kinda wild thing about this date: I recently got an age test done for one of my dogs, Little Girl, who is like a child to me. She’s an old rescue, and we never knew her real age. It turns out she was born on October 15th, 2010. The exact same day Real Friends wrote its very first song. There’s something pretty special about that.

So yeah, this date means a lot to me, and I just wanted to let you know why.

october is full of unexpected hope & letting go of the illusion of control 🍁 by @kylefaselisdead

I was really moved by a part of a documentary about 9/11. It told the story of a man who knew he wasn’t going to make it out of one of the towers. He called his wife, and instead of talking about the horrible situation he was in, they talked about the simple, ordinary moments they had shared in life.

I’m not gonna lie, I teared up. It reminded me how significant the small days we usually write off as nothing really are.

Watching the same movie with someone you love for the 10th time. Driving around on the first day of fall listening to your favorite record. A phone call with someone who means everything to you, just talking about nothing.

The ordinary days.

That’s what inspired this poem.

Who knew Halloween decorations could bring on such heavy emotions. // a poem by: me by @kylefaselisdead

My best friend Tom passed away in 2018. I have the fondest memories of us driving around with no destination on fall nights, drinking way too much pumpkin spice coffee and talking about life.

This is part of a spoken word piece I got to perform on our song “Orange & Red” from our album Blue Hour. It’s taken directly from multiple poems I wrote after losing Tom. I think about him and miss him every day—but even more so around this time of year.

Tell your friends you love them today. Most importantly, enjoy the simple moments you share with them.
Love you. 🖤🍁 by @kylefaselisdead

I get this haunting feeling that I’m hiding from healing, but I don’t care anymore.
