MYTH: ā€œIā€™ll just rely on Social Security and figure out retirement later.ā€ TRUTH: Later may be too late for nurses retiring after 2032. I used to think the same thing. Between shifts, charting, and just trying to recoverā€¦ retirement feels like a future-me problem. But hereā€™s what future-you actually needs to know: The CBO projects Social Securityā€™s trust fund could deplete as early as 2032. After that, payroll taxes alone may only cover a fraction of your scheduled benefit ā€” unless Congress makes changes. Translation? When we retire, Social Security may pay us LESS than whatā€™s currently promised. Not zero. Not gone. Just less. And the nurses most at risk? The ones counting on it as their only plan. Iā€™m 31 yo, and Iā€™m not afraid to admit thatā€¦ 1. Learning about money scares me. Iā€™m a nurse. I spent years learning how to save lives, but nobody taught me how to save money. I learned that the more I learn about money, the clearer I see how terrifying the world really is and how much we actually need for the future. Sometimes ignorance felt easier because I didnā€™t have to worry about how much Iā€™m missing or how unprepared people are. But Iā€™m choosing to face that fear because this education isnā€™t just for meā€¦ itā€™s for my family, my future kids, and every person I can help prepare for whatā€™s coming. 2. Iā€™m scared of having kids. I donā€™t have kids yet, but I want them soon. Tbh, Iā€™m terrified I wonā€™t be good enough for them because they deserve the world. Being a public health nurse showed me what it takes: the provision, the protection, the presence. I feel so far away from being the dad I need to be, from having the business and financial foundation to support them. But Iā€™m building that life right now, preparing for them before they even get here. And that excites me more than anything. 3. Iā€™m jealous of everyone else. For years, I thought there was something wrong with me. I struggled and didnā€™t understand why. I get mad that day to day activities are easier for everyone else. Through school, life, etc. Finally getting diagnosed explained so much, but it also showed me life was going to be harder than I thought. But hereā€™s what I believe: God gives His hardest challenges to His best soldiers. I am destined for more. Thereā€™s a reason I have ADHD, and itā€™s to prove to everyone that itā€™s not about the condition, itā€™s about the decision. Every single day, I choose to fight. 4. I always feel behind. Everyone around me seems to have it figured out: buying houses, having kids, building lives. Iā€™m over here still learning the basics of money, still building from scratch. But Iā€™m learning that ā€œbehindā€ is just a story we tell ourselves. Iā€™m exactly where I need to be, doing the work nobody else wants to do. Hereā€™s the truth nobody inside the system will say: ā¤ļø Your compassion doesnā€™t disappear when you leave bedside. The hospital just stops profiting from it. You didnā€™t lose your calling. You just stopped letting someone underpay you for it. ā¤ļø Watching patients die broke isnā€™t just sad. Itā€™s a warning. Every nurse saying ā€œthat wonā€™t be meā€ is one diagnosis away from being wrong. ā¤ļø The system needs you to believe your benefits will protect you. Your 401k gets taxed later. Your pension might disappear. Your insurance has limits. One serious illness will show you exactly where those limits are. ā¤ļø Everything you did holding someoneā€™s hand through the worst day of their life transfers outside healthcare: listening, managing crisis, breaking down complex stuff, advocating under pressure, staying calm when everything falls apart. Those arenā€™t just nursing skills. Theyā€™re business skills. ā¤ļø Leaving bedside isnā€™t abandoning your patients. Itā€™s refusing to become one. The best way to help people is not ending up needing help yourself. ā¤ļø Youā€™re not ā€œjust a nurse.ā€ Youā€™re underleveraged. Youā€™ve got skills that solve real problems outside hospitals. You just havenā€™t been shown how to use them yet. ā¤ļø The only people saying ā€œnurses canā€™t do anything elseā€ are people who never tried or employers who need you to stay. Neither one has your best interest in mind. I watched my oncology patients work their entire lives, do everything ā€œright,ā€ and still die worried about leaving their families in debt. I help nurses build financial protection now so they donā€™t become the families I used to serve. Letā€™s bust a myth thatā€™s keeping nurses broke šŸš« MYTH: Iā€™ll need less money in retirement because I wonā€™t have work expenses I talked with my loved ones on their future plans, and this was their expectation after many years of hard work. Relax, move overseas, live their lives on a cheaper way of life. Sounds familiar? Especially if your family are immigrants. But hereā€™s the TRUTH: Most nurses actually spend MORE in retirement, not less. Why this matters for nurses: 1. Healthcare costs EXPLODE after 65 - Medicare doesnā€™t cover everything, and one surgery can drain years of savings. 2. After 30+ years of caring for others, you actually want to LIVE: travel, see grandkids, enjoy hobbies you postponed. 3. Planning for less means youā€™ll either run out of money or end up back at work when youā€™re supposed to be enjoying life, or perhaps affect your family to financially support you. Real talk: I had a friend whose coworker retired after decades of nursing. Came back just months later because they fell ill, needed surgery, went to a nursing home temporarily, and burned through their entire retirement. Now theyā€™re back working, possibly for life. At the bedside in oncology, I saw patients who were literally about to retire - party planned, trip booked - then got admitted to our floor. Their nest eggs? Gone to treatments and care. What we do instead: ā†’ Factor in healthcare inflation (rises FASTER than regular inflation) ā†’ Build tax-efficient accounts (so youā€™re not losing 30-40% to taxes when you need it for medical bills) ā†’ Create protected income streams that survive market crashes AND medical emergencies The bottom line?
