It has been 40 days since the murder of George Floyd and as many of you are just awaking to the centuries of racial injustice engrained in every facet of our nation, I don’t just hope or urge, but expect and demand that you continue your epiphanies. Today is not a day to hold pride over our nation, but to reflect on how it defines independence- who we grant independence to. It is a day to recognize the synonymity of liberty and white supremacy. To recognize the depth of your privilege and white supremacy is a process that many of you are too comfortable to take on- and it shows. As your feeds shift back to normalcy, ask yourself, how are you feeling today? If you feel content and carefree enough to share your pics at lido house, your new apartment, or your July 4th festivities, then maybe your comfort is dominating your “understanding”. To the white people in my hometown, which is basically all of you, acknowledge your surroundings/contemplate the lack of diversity in these surroundings. Maybe you’ll realize how it has shaped your perspective and your privilege- maybe you will realize the less you know is not the better. Maybe you’ll realize that justice is not just the prosecution of murdering cops, defunding police, voting in your local elections or however else Instagram convinced you that you’re an ally and your work is complete. Your work will never be complete. Take accountability of white supremacy, unlearn your accountability of white supremacy, and exist outside and against white supremacy. Build the habit of recognizing the process and be open to discovering more about the reality between black and white life. Acknowledge the sacrifices you must make in your life and pay the price. It is the minimum reimbursement you, as an individual privileged by the system, is expected to give. Before you put on your red shoes and jeans today, ask yourself, do I love America because of the life I have here? The opportunity I have here? The respect I have here? Until that answer is objective, July 4th will never be a celebration of independence, but rather a celebration of the white mans liberty.
