An introduction to Roped Scrambling with Shane from Ascend Mountaineering,

Expectation - Hit a few grade 1/2 scrambles

Reality -

Day 1 - Learn the ropes, tie the knots, trad climb a 50m route (Little Tryfan), then hit a Grade 3 scramble before abseiling down.

Day 2 - Hike to Bristly Ridge, Grade 2 scramble as a team of 3, get a few shots, summit Gylder Fach, hike back.

Quality weekend, undoubtedly worth every penny.

Crazy to think that just two weeks ago I didn’t even know the Baetic mountain range existed. But now I do, and I can’t help but feel I’ll back again sometime soon.

Yesterday I explored La Concha, a 1215m summit overlooking Marbella, before venturing over to Cruz de Juanar as well. 11.5 miles walked in total, 7.5 Litres of water consumed and my first experience of doing this in 30 degree+ heat 🥵

Genuinely absolutely loved it, and I apologise but apparently it’s becoming a theme that I fall in love with every Mountain Range I visit haha they’re just all amazing 🫶⛰️

This one was special..

Inspired by another account, and a concept that suggests life doesn’t need to be put on hold until the weekend.

Long story short, I’ve been planning to give Yr Wyddfa, via
Crib Goch a go for some time now, but there always seemed to be a reason why I couldn’t squeeze it in. So I decided that instead of feeling limited by my professional life (my 09:00 to 17:00) I’m going to try utilising my 17:00-09:00, by giving it a go after work one night, which turned out to be last night… and what a night it was 🌅

Absolutely incredible experience on an empty Crib Goch, zero queues on Snowdon and my first time hiking in the dark as well (with a head torch, of course).

Started 18:45
Done by 23:30.

I didn’t get home till 02:00 though, could have maybe camped?

With the school holidays in full swing, I completely forgot that I did Foxes Rake a few weeks ago..

It was my first rake, but I did my research and all evidence suggested it’d be perfect for some solo exploration, and it was.

Found it really easy, really enjoyable and would fully recommend. It has a small steady stream of water running down it, so some care is required. But there were plenty of larger rocks to grab hold of, or even sit on if you fancied taking a few photos etc on your way up.

If you’ve any recommendations of other rakes in the lakes, let me know as I’d be keen to give them a go.
