The 🍵 didn’t change me the struggle it took to get here did 🪽

You’ve never heard The Manager tell stories of bodies piling up during genocide and the forgiveness needed to cleanse the land of 1000 hills 🇷🇼

You’ve never walked through the gates of La Perla with Dixon or watched Javi and Luariz feed families in San Juan 🇵🇷

You’ve never witnessed the kids dance to Amapiano in the heart of Johannesburg or watched Zaid connect people in the birthplace of apartheid 🇿🇦

You’ve never seen the Jamaicans get drunk in Brixton 🇬🇧 or heard the British Council fill with Donatus laughter and Darnelle’s smile

You’ve never watched Baby Craw jigg to Boosie in Baton Rouge, and you’ve never seen the smile on someone's face when Smook says Blue Store fried chicken 🦞

You’ve never smelled brown shuga fill the halls of Chelsea High and you don’t know what Let It Fly means to Ceez and the people of Chelsea

I don’t embellish when I say I’ve sacrificed everything for this and not for ego or self but for some part of me that still has hope. Most have seen the glorification of sacrifice but don’t understand it, which has resulted in 1,000 uninformed opinions and a declining level of respect for those who don't live in this nuanced space, which I guess is another internal ego battle.

Most conversations I spend defining and attributing value to “culture” and the impact of the culture while fighting against overrated beliefs in proximity (Why are you focusing on helping “them”?) and quantitative numbers (”how many social media views?”, which is ironic because if they did a Google search they'd know I have a leg up with social 😉🍵🥷🏿).

The next phase of this thing will have more cheer and less sacrifice and what it took to get here will never be seen. I will carry these last few years like a stamp to remember the blood sweat and tears given to this thing that brings joy to so many people around the world by @kyleumemba

Matcha Madness is a daytime party hosted by Kyle Umemba. This first party was two floors at Hue with ceremonial grade matcha from Bon Coffee and ByChae, live DJ sets from some of Boston’s best, and live painting. Upstairs was elevated brunch vibes, downstairs was a full hidden speakeasy day party.

But more than the event, Kyle is the cofounder of Let It Fly, focused on creating opportunities for underserved communities through scholarships, mentorship, and youth programs. The kind of person who builds that is the kind of person worth showing up for.
