In honor of Suicide Awareness Month, I wanted to share a few things that I’ve learned since getting a second chance at life after attempting to take my own life in 2020 and through losing people I love along the way. 💔

I don’t share that for sympathy. I share it because I know what it feels like to believe the pain you’re in is permanent.

Six years later, I know it isn’t.

I’ve gotten to watch my children grow. I’ve built things I’m proud of (lose a lot too 🤣). I’ve laughed until I cried. I’ve stayed sober. I’ve loved people deeply. I’ve also walked through seasons that were incredibly painful.

And I’m still here.

So if I could leave you with just a few things, they would be these:

1. Tell people you love them. And more importantly, show them. Love people loudly, even when the world tells you to be guarded or too cool to care. Every person needs a little sunshine, and you may never know how much your words or kindness mattered to someone on a day they were struggling to stay.

2. Don’t carry shame for your suffering. Tell someone. Find one safe person and let them see the parts of you that aren’t okay. And if you truly feel like you don’t have that person, please reach out to me. You deserve to be heard.

3. Life really is beautiful. That doesn’t mean life is always easy. There will be seasons of grief, heartbreak, disappointment and suffering. Sometimes those seasons last much longer than we think we can handle. But even if it feels like you’ve been hurting your entire life, please believe that beauty can still find you.

There are ordinary days in my life now that the version of me in 2020 almost never got to see.

That thought will never be lost on me.
