POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I am very proud to finally put this out into the world. I wrote this when I was reflecting on my journey as an artist and feeling incredibly frustrated with why I stopped being fearless and creating my own projects. Being bullied throughout my life in school really left deep scars of self doubt. It made me extremely fearful of what people thought of me and prevented me from taking big creative risks.

If you were bullied too, if you notice every look and read into every word and feel like you have to shrink to be okay, I want you to hear this. It doesn’t matter what they think. It never did. Keep moving. Keep making your work. Don’t let anyone make you dim your light.

Thank you to my amazing husband for capturing these beautiful frames, helping me set up the project to edit and always believing in me. You make such a safe space for me to create. Getting to live life and create with you is one of the greatest joys of my life.

Wow. My official 2025 acting reel is finally here.

I haven’t had a new reel in nearly five years, and looking at how far I’ve come fills me with so much gratitude. This industry isn’t easy—it challenges you, breaks you down, and tests your resilience. There are days when I’ve questioned everything, but I’m grateful the universe continues to push me forward. Every audition, callback, and booking reminds me I’m meant to do this.

First, thank you to my incredible team— @rikkidalemanagement & @tarynkelly7 —for believing in me, pitching me tirelessly, and encouraging me to get this reel done. To my agent, Jennifer Sims at @rpmtalentagency, your guidance and support mean everything. I’ll never forget the joy of jumping up and down over the video game booking!

To my mentor, @jimdklock —I never thought I’d find someone who truly champions my growth. Your generosity, unwavering support, and weekend workshops have been one of my biggest blessings. You’ve dedicated so much time to helping me with auditions and strengthening my craft, and I’m endlessly grateful.

To @mikecapozzi —thank you for helping me put together my first reel, coaching me through self-tapes, and always offering insightful feedback. Your support has meant so much.

To my best friends, @soyanaa_ @ally.s.nasr @lindsaybethcahill for the countless hours of self-tape help, pep talks, and being my rock in this wild industry. I couldn’t do this without you.

To my husband, @brenpancake I owe you so much. You’ve directed me, helped me with countless auditions, given me ideas, and supported me even after exhausting 12-hour days or when you were sick. You remind me to trust the process, get out of my own way, and embrace that acting, like directing, is a lifelong pursuit. Your love and belief in me keep me going.

To my Mom @lydiahurlbut Dad @shanehurlbutasc Brother, and Nana—thank you for believing in me, sending me to acting school, and never once suggesting I do something else. Instead, you’ve lifted me through self-doubt and reminded me why I love this craft. Your love and support carry me through even my hardest days.

This journey isn’t a solo one—it takes a village, and I’m so lucky to have mine. šŸ¤ by @kyragracee

who can relate!? i JUST had this happen to me a few weeks ago. i auditioned for a main character in a video game TWICE and then they put it back out on actors access a week later 🫠 all we can do is keep pushing but this definitely stings when they do a second round of casting šŸ™ƒ.

Actors this backdrop changed the game and is the best investment I’ve made in my self tape setup. This is not sponsored. The Raubay is a collapsible high quality backdrop that takes 10 seconds to setup. I used to deal with a photography backdrop stand that required a crazy amount of setup time and would make me hate the self tape process. Couldn’t recommend this more. Click the link in my bio if you’re interested!

The casting platforms I actually use that are worth the money. Part one. Quick note, I am speaking as an LA based actor. A lot of this applies across the US, but every market is different, so do your own research too.

ACTORS ACCESS: The gold standard, and the one platform every actor needs to be on.

-What most casting directors use because of Breakdown Services
-Huge range of union and non union work
-Free to create a profile, reps submit you for free
-Self submitting needs Plus: $68 a year, or $54.40 for SAG-AFTRA
-Watch the add-ons: $10 per headshot after your first 2, slate shots $5, video $22 a minute, and $44 if you go one second over

Most of my biggest auditions came through here. Even though my reps submit me, I always self submit too. It keeps you in control. Over 6 years I have spent around $1,400 here, so be strategic.

CASTING NETWORKS: The strongest platform for commercial and print, plus background and stand-in work.

-Free basic profile: 2 photos, 1 video, 1 audio
-Premium is $29.99 a month or $299.90 a year for unlimited uploads and self submitting

I have booked featured background and stand-in roles through it. I do not get many commercial auditions, about 8 this year, so the cost can feel steep. If you book commercially it is worth it. If not, look for stand-in work through it to earn the cost back. And even if reps submit you, the free plan only allows 2 photos and 1 video, so you often end up needing premium anyway.

This is part one. Part two is coming with more platforms and the free resources worth knowing.

Which platforms do you use and love? Would love to hear in the comments.

What do casting directors actually look for in a self tape? It is the question I hear actors ask ALL the time. I asked award winning casting directors directly over the years and took notes. Here they are.

TIP 1: Start with a real moment before. A genuine thought or feeling before you say a single word. There is so much noise about hooking casting in the first three seconds, but you do not need to hook anyone. Just be grounded and rooted in truth from the first frame.

TIP 2: Know who you are talking to and lock in your eye lines. If there are multiple people in the scene, each needs a distinct eye line on a clear side of the frame. A lack of eye line specificity is the biggest giveaway that you are lost.

TIP 3: Do not be afraid of physicality. A self tape does not mean you have to stand in a box. If your character is out of breath, be out of breath. Let the scene live in your body, not just your face.

TIP 4: Do not jump straight to memorization. Comprehend the scene first. Note the who, what, where, when, and why. Then make every take genuinely different at the top, as long as they stay grounded in truth.

TIP 5: Follow the instructions and every detail in them. Actors who follow them stand out because so many do not.

TIP 6: Watch your deadlines because they move without alerting you. If a deadline is too tight and will sacrifice the quality of your tape, ask for an extension. Never rush something in at the cost of quality.

TIP 7: If you confirm an audition, submit it. If you cannot, decline it and let them know why. Casting is waiting on your tape and they notice when you confirm and go dark.

At the end of the day, the only thing you can control is your work. Make the impression. Book the office, not the job.

What self tape tips have changed the game for you? Would love to hear in the comments.

5 resources that are actually worth the investment as an actor. It truly amazes me when people do not realize how expensive it is to be an actor. The investment we make in our materials, our headshots, the platforms, all of it. I wanted to name a few resources I actually use that I think are worth it, because believe me, when I started out there were areas I wasted money on, and I want to save you from that.

I am speaking predominantly from my experience in Los Angeles, but a lot of this applies to other markets too. Just wanted to put that out there since every market can have its own platforms that are more commonly used.

Here are the first 5.
1. Actors Access. The monopoly for theatrical submissions. This is how your reps submit you and how casting sends out breakdowns. Get the annual membership for unlimited self submissions, and SAG-AFTRA members get a discount.

2. Casting Networks. The monopoly for the commercial world. In LA especially, this is mainly where commercial auditions live, but it is also a great way to find background and standing in work. I have booked bigger opportunities that started as background through this platform.

3. IMDb Pro. About $150 a year and worth every cent. You can look up casting directors and filmmakers contact info, which you cannot do without it. You can also build your own profile with your credits, reps, union affiliation, and reel.

4. Improv class. I used to hate improv. Genuinely hated it. Now I think it is non negotiable. I have heard from multiple casting directors that they look for improv experience on a resume. My favorite is Groundlings.

5. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Completely free if you are a member. Casting access classes with real working casting directors, a free self tape studio, a Voiceover Lab, and so much more.

This is just the beginning. I will be listing more resources soon.

What are your favorite resources? Would love to hear in the comments. Please like, follow, save & share. We are in this together ā™”

Actors, GETTING THE AUDITION IS ALREADY THE WIN, YOU ALREADY WON. It’s so easy to view booking the job as the win but the truth is you had to beat out more people to even get an audition than you do to book the job. Let that sink in a second..You could’ve been the only one from your agency or management chosen for an audition. We CANNOT control if we book the job BUT we can control the materials we put out in order to get the audition and we control our prep for the audition. After that you just pray and walk away because there is nothing else you could possibly do. Start celebrating the fact that you are even getting auditions. There are so many actors who want auditions and opportunities so badly who are not getting them. This mindset shift is so important and something that I’ve been really focusing on. Hope this helps šŸ«¶šŸ»
