New DP Work • Yesterday’s Tomorrow

It was a pleasure yet again to shoot this September short with @sophpelletier and @haydenkolachik

For this one directed and written by @sophpelletier it was set in a rather mundane life of an office worker contrasted by the warmth of child’s home. To me an office is mainly even light, which was what I leaned into, but for interest I underexposed a bit and made a wall of solids to add a touch of contrast. For the rest of the scenes around that set I kept it pretty simple and added a light here and there for interest but kept the contrast low over all and chose to not light the subject directly.

In the home, for warmth I leaned into our practicals much more and simply pushed some direction with godox and nanlite soft panel units. The idea with this whole project was less is more.

For lenses, I used my new favorites, the voigtlander Nokton Cine Modded primes. I swapped the mount of my Alexa Mini LF to natively accept these M lenses. Probably some of my favorite super speed lenses which I ended up leaning into quite a bit on this one.

New DP Work: “Barrel Hunters” Sizzle

It was a pleasure to shoot the sizzle for this show. I’ve always been a huge fan of doc-style travel series, so when the opportunity came up to shoot this with director @rogertully, I jumped at it. I was a little ambitious given we had a small crew, but I opted to shoot on my Alexa Mini LF and Mini, paired with @dulens.usa Apo Mini Primes for a slightly vintage look — it paired perfectly with the idea of tracking down these extremely old, dusty barrels across America.

Being doc-style, it was mostly natural light, with some big soft fill for our more conversational scenes — just a @godoxlighting F400Bi. But I was always chasing harsh shadows where available, and had my gaffer lean into hard lights in the barn area to give the down-and-dirty search sequences more of an Indiana Jones feel.

That’s where the Apo Mini Primes really shined — vintage enough to keep a clean look in most scenes, while reacting beautifully to harsh light and flaring just enough to add extra texture to the image.

Barrel Hunters follows Charles Ferri and Rocco Cafferelli as they dive deep into the art of whiskey-making. From char to ingredients, experience the meticulous process behind every barrel.

New DP Work “Seen”
Another fabulous shoot with the gang @sophpelletier @haydenkolachik as well as the rest of their amazing team. This was an ambitious short this month with multiple locations and the crew absolutely killed it. Shooting all the twists and turns of this short kept us on our toes. @sophpelletier you were a fantastic directer with a dialed in vision, you were decisive in every shot and joy to work with. Can’t wait for the next one.

Couldn’t have asked for a better crew.
