The biggest surprise of the year for me.

This was actually a discovery from a mystery sample bundle. I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful friend whose mom is a fellow fraghead, and she gifted us nearly 100 perfume samples, ranging from big names to niche and independent houses.

The name immediately piqued my interest, but the second the scent touched my nose, I was enamored. It was unlike anything I had smelled before.

It’s as if sapphires were bottled up.

Blue Talisman is sparkling and effervescent, but there’s something substantial underneath all that brightness. It has this uniqueness that captures you immediately and makes you want to keep smelling it.

It opens with the most gorgeous crisp pear and bright, juicy citrus, but almost immediately there’s something sweet and warm humming in the background. Ginger. That completely caught me by surprise. I love ginger, but I had never really thought about what it would be like to wear it. Here, it gives the fruit this warm, slightly spicy energy that keeps it from ever feeling like a straightforward fruity fragrance.

And then it fades into the most beautiful, almost indescribable musky skin scent. The sparkle softens, everything melts together, and what’s left just smells incredible on skin.

I’ve worn this out. I’ve worn it during the day. I’ve even worn it while working out. To me, it’s one of those rare anytime fragrances, and that versatility is part of what makes it so special.

How @exnihiloparis took a fruity fragrance and turned it into something this distinctive, sophisticated and completely addictive is beyond me. Blue Talisman was an unexpected discovery, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite fragrances of the year. Possibly of all time.

And this is exactly why I think sampling is so important, especially if you’re trying to build a collection that feels truly curated. I never would have known to seek this fragrance out on my own. Sampling gives you the freedom to explore outside of what you think you like and sometimes the fragrance you never would have chosen for yourself becomes the one you can’t stop wearing. taken in Los Angeles, California by @la.decanteur

Which L’EPOQUE fragrance are you? Because apparently this discovery set is also a personality test.

✨ Delusions of Grandeur
You want everyone in the room to turn and look when you walk in. Whether it’s good or bad attention is honestly beside the point.

🌹 Dopamine Rose
You’re a little intimidated by rose and worried it’ll be too much. You want something sweet, immediately pleasurable and very easy to love.

🧸 Inner Child
You’re deeply nostalgic and have fond memories of childhood. A scent, a song or a place can instantly transport you back there.

🌲 Dreams and Nightmares
You’re either a forest fairy or a witch. There is no in-between. This was my favorite of the entire set, so make of that what you will. 🧚‍♀️🧙‍♀️

🌻 Serotonin Spritz
You only wear pastels, your favorite flower is a sunflower and, to quote BenDeLaCreme, you are “terminally delightful.”

So…era are you in? 👀

One final note: the little red caps? Adorable. Having to dab them on? L’EPOQUE, I am begging you for atomizers. 🫠

Smell the season, not the trend: FIG.

Fig is one of my favorite notes because it can be green, milky, creamy and woody all at once. It has warmth without heaviness and sweetness without feeling sugary or overtly fruity. To me, it feels botanical and alive.

Vow Factor by @snif feels especially right for this moment in the season. Rose brings a soft floral quality, ambrette adds warm, glowing muskiness, tonka gives it a subtle creamy warmth, and cedarwood grounds everything with dry woods. Together with the green, milky fig, it feels like that exact moment between late summer and early fall: still lush and alive, but warmer, softer and starting to turn woody.

This was also a sample success! I tried the sample and immediately bought the full bottle, but I honestly might have passed it up if I hadn’t tried it first. Yet another reason I’m always going to advocate for sampling.

And if you love Diptyque Philosykos, hear me out: these aren’t dupes. They’re cousins. Philosykos is the fig tree in summer. Vow Factor is the fig tree as summer starts turning into fall. 🌿

Happy to report that Good Girl Blush Elixir was a VERY successful blind buy 👃✨ But the real score? Everything else in this unboxing was free with purchase directly from @carolinaherrera .

This is exactly why I’m always going to encourage you to sample, sample, sample whenever you can. Samples are one of the best ways to explore new fragrances thoughtfully, wear them on your own skin, and figure out what you actually love before investing in a full bottle.

And don’t sleep on buying directly from the fragrance houses! Between samples, minis, gifts with purchase and special offers, sometimes the deals are too good. Now if only I could get my hands of a bottle of Cedar Chic 😭🤍

Pretty packaging will absolutely get my attention, but the nose gets the final vote. And this time? She’s a keeper. 💕

Neroli 🍊🌼 One flower, very different interpretations.

I’m comparing the bright, bitter-citrusy character of neroli essential oil with a sweeter neroli accord that immediately took me somewhere nostalgic.

And I NEED to know… does anyone else get Smarties from it?! Because once I smelled it, I couldn’t unsmell it 😂

Aurner by Aesop has been one of my favorite fragrances since I first smelled it. 💐🖤

It’s a floral, but not in the way “floral perfume” usually makes you think. Aurner is moody, green, spicy and a little strange. Magnolia leaf and geranium give it this lush botanical quality, while cardamom brings in a warmth and spice that keeps it from ever feeling overly pretty or delicate.

What I love most is the contrast. It smells like flowers with the lights turned down. There’s something fresh and alive about it, but also dark, woody and almost brooding underneath.

And yes, cardamom again. Apparently I have a type. 😂

This is one of those fragrances I think is nearly perfect. Interesting enough that I keep wanting to smell it, but wearable enough that I actually reach for it.

If you find yourself near an Aesop, go smell Aurner on skin. This one deserves more than a paper strip.
