The work began with the house key of someone close to me who was deported despite having a clean criminal record. I intended to press the key into soap, but stopped before completing the piece. I became uncertain about turning an experience that was not mine, and whose consequences I had not personally endured, into an artwork. I kept asking myself whether it was my story to tell.

Nearly a year later, while rereading Paul Auster’s The Invention of Solitude and thinking about his interest in coincidence and the unexpected intersections between otherwise unrelated events, my brother found the unused soap while visiting from Colombia.

Two days later, I encountered a passage in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun in which a character’s brother presses a key into soap so that a copy can be made and used to break into his parents’ house while they are at church.

What struck me was not simply the appearance of a key or a bar of soap, but the repetition of the exact gesture I had abandoned nearly a year before.

The coincidence brought me back to the work.

The key is now impressed into a bar of goat milk soap and placed in the gallery bathroom for public use, where the key impression will gradually disappear. by @la_devalencia_rey

Con mucha emoción pude agradecerle personalmente al Presidente Álvaro Uribe y a Doña Lina (!!!!) por el inmenso sacrificio que han hecho por Colombia, por los cambios que lograron en los años 2000, cuando vivíamos en un estado fallido tomado por las FARC, por la oportunidad de poder volver a nuestras carreteras, por recuperar la institucionalidad. Jonathan, mi conductor, visiblemente emocionado y sin saber a donde ibamos, le agradeció por liberar a su pueblo del yugo paramilitar. Por devolverles la paz. Una PAZ REAL. Y Terminó la mañana jugando fútbol con los nietos de Uribe 🥹
