The lighthouse that moved

First lit in the last days of 1900, Rubjerg Knude has forever been at peril of a vast shifting sand drift and eroding cliffs. By now it would have toppled into the sea but in 2019 an amazing engineering project saw the 75ft tall, 720 tonne lighthouse moved 70m inland on rails. The local authorities hope the lighthouse will be safe in its new home until at least the 2060s.

Shimoda, known for its namako-walled houses, latticed with bamboo, clay and tiles to resist fire and moisture, and its fish! We arrived there last week on our way to Kozushima island to find the town preparing for its annual festival. Shop fronts were plastered with photos from previous festivals. As dark fell, family groups gathered outside their homes to practice taiko drumming (short clip in story).

Where Soda had a Salon

The Okuna Building in Tokyo wears almost a century of life in its faded walls and worn floors. Jade-coloured tiles line the hallway and a battered safe stands near a gilded cage.

Built in 1932 by Okuno Jisuke, its luxury apartments were a novelty, with reinforced concrete to withstand earthquakes and a lift between floors. It’s a time capsule now, preserved among the modern glass-fronted stores of Ginza and rented by artisans.

I’d read about its last remaining resident, Soda Yushi, who ran a hairstyling salon and lived in Apartment 306 until she died in 2009 at the age of 100. Her apartment is open on the 6th of every month as the Ginza Okuno Building Room 306 Project. Not open on this particular day, but the building itself was so unusual, especially its internal windows looking from one building to another coupled to it in 1934, and the enigmatic labels on doors. My favourite: “A Den of Anorak. Appointment only.”
