Thank you @annikkaolsen and @artnet for this marvelous feature on my beloved, sacred Crit group!!
Forever grateful to @kelmil125 and @jmariestoller for creating and nurturing a space for us all these years, and to every one of my Gossip gals who inspire me endlessly with their brains and hearts and poetry.

"While artists groups are certainly not new or even particularly novel, they are often only considered seriously when viewed through a historical lens. Conversations today about artists are largely tethered to their relationships to the market, collectors, institutions, galleries, or more broadly the social, economic, or political climate. ButΒ throughout time, it is artists’ relationships to other artists that have proven a potent undercurrentβ€”perhaps more potent than all others, influencing the history, present, and future of art-making itself."

Throughout ancient Celtic and Norse folklore (and that of many more regions), the cuckoo is endowed with supernatural abilities to summon souls and travel between the worlds of the living and the dead, coinciding with the changing of seasons.Β Β Its associations with time and renewal, along with superstitions around hearing its song made it an ideal feature for 18th century Black Forest clockmakers.

An Eastern European folk ritual carried out by bereaved women involves burying messages of grief deep in the woods, along with an effigy of a cuckoo. The belief held is that, when unearthed after a few days, the cuckoo will have flown the message to the land of the dead to unburden the women of their sorrow.

'Predictive coding' is a neuroscientific theory of brain function proposing that the human brain constantly generates and updates a "mental model" of an environment, using it to predict and fill in visual information to make sense of a scene.

The title of the show featuring this piece, π˜”π˜¦π˜―π˜΅π˜’π˜ π˜”π˜°π˜₯𝘦𝘭, borrows from this function of using what we know to fill in what we don't.Β Β Because grief erodes what is sensible, the clock’s missing half is impossible to complete with knowable things. taken in 125 Maiden Lane by @laaang
