If you’re new here, meet @dir._david_rountree, the owner of LA Acting Studios and the reason our training looks and feels like a real film set.

David has been directing for 23 years, with 6 feature films under his belt, plus 9 films he’s written and produced. He’s currently producing both a TV show and a feature, and he brings that real world experience directly into the classroom.

He started as an actor, so he understands the actor brain. But he trains you the way a director needs you to work on set: technically sharp, emotionally grounded, and camera‑ready.

Actors get stuck in their heads when they start overthinking with running logic loops, judging themselves, or trying to “get it right.” Coach Sean shows Andrew and Ben how to break that cycle using three core tools: emotion, improv, and relationship anchoring.

When you commit to what you’re feeling, your body wakes up and your instincts take over. When you use improv as an emotional ramp, you enter the scene lit instead of flat, giving the audience something to respond to. And when you connect your work to a real relationship, your choices deepen, your behavior becomes specific, and the audience believes you.

These tools work together to pull you out of your head and into grounded, cinematic behavior. Emotion reconnects you to your instrument. Improv gives you momentum. Relationships give you truth. This is how actors stop performing and start behaving.

At LA Acting Studios, we train actors in every facet of on set work such as the technical craft, the emotional craft, and the storytelling craft, so you can play freely and tell the story you actually want to tell.

In this reel, we see coach @seanmiguelperez offering a couple of tools to our actors Andrew and Ben.

1. When actors get in their heads, they’re usually overthinking logical thoughts. But humans are emotional creatures so one way to stop is to commit to the emotions and feelings during the scene. This brings you back into your body and reconnects you to your instrument.

2. Improv can be useful, especially when you’re finding that you’re not bringing anything fresh to the scene or you need an emotional ramp to help start the scene with some emotional fire! We don’t want our scenes to start flat or we won’t hook our audience so if you’re emotionally lit, the audience can respond.

3. Humans are all about relationships so when you’re doing your work, connect with something or someone specific and personal because the stronger that relationship is, the stronger the connection to the relationships in the scene and the audience will believe you more for it.

@alysonrodriguezorenstein was holding a smile and slowly dropping a notebook into the trash and even though it seemed small, those two choices were killing the comedic moment. It softens the beat. It removes the contrast. It takes away from the comedy.

Coach @seanmiguelperez teaches her that comedy needs sharpness. A clear facial expression change right at the moment she drops the notebook gives her scene partner the seriousness the moment needs. And the sharp movement of dropping it, paired with the sharp facial shift, creates an unexpected contrast that makes the moment funny. It’s a tiny comedic lift inside a dramatic scene that helps the audience come up emotionally before the next heavy beat.

Alyson did a great job taking the lesson and making it her own!
