‘Surviving Biafra: Voices from the Nigerian Civil War’ premieres tomorrow June 1st on @bbciplayer & @youtube

As the grandson of Brigadier General Godwin Alabi-Isama, the Nigerian Civil War has always felt close to me. I grew up hearing stories about the conflict and the role my grandfather played within it. But like many Nigerians of my generation, I came to realise how much of this history I did not know, and how many voices had yet to be heard.

That realisation became the starting point for this documentary. Over the past few years, myself & @laakesidee have had the privilege of speaking directly with survivors of the war; people who witnessed it firsthand, fought in it, endured it, and continue to live with its history today. Importantly, these testimonies come from people on both sides of the conflict.

What emerged was not a single narrative, but a collection of deeply personal experiences. Stories of survival, loss, resilience, courage, and humanity. Stories that deserve to be preserved. While we worked closely with historians, academics, and consultants to help maintain facts and context, the heart of this documentary belongs to the survivors who trusted us with their memories.

No single project can fully capture the complexity of the Nigerian Civil War, nor should it claim to. Our hope is simply to preserve these voices and contribute to a broader understanding of a chapter of Nigeria’s history.

As time passes, fewer eyewitnesses remain. Their stories matter. Thank you to every survivor and family who shared their experiences with us. We hope this documentary encourages more coverage of our history actively.

No city fascinates me as much as Lagos. It’s easy to be trapped in your bubble when you live in Lagos. Encountering the different layers Lagos is made of, is an interesting journey & I’ve heard the most incredible stories too. There’s a lot that goes on under the belly of this city.

Images from a Dambe ringside in Lagos where fighters battle for money, power & respect, the crowd cheer them on, spray them money and even take outside bets on the winner.

Lagos, Nigeria.

Photography is my favorite method of observation.

Backstage at Arise Fashion Week, this is where all the calculated chaos happens & also where the magic is. Lagos, Nigeria.
