Happy First Anniversary to the love of my life, @laandkk. You are my best friend, my sounding board, my person. Through everything there is no one else that I would want to be by my side. We’ve had a great first year together, even with the ups and downs it was great because we were together. @warwicksjohnson You’ve seen me through every season - both at my strongest and at my most undone - and have never once looked away or wavered in your commitment to show up for me each and every day. You make me feel seen, heard, loved, worthy, and valued. You’ve held space for wounds you didn’t create, stood steady in storms you didn’t cause, and loved me so unconditionally that you’ve managed to heal parts I didn’t even know were broken.

You have shown me what true love looks like. It’s not just about who’s fun at parties, it’s about who shows up to the doctor’s appointments, the infusions, the surgeries, and who sleeps on a tiny pleather hospital sofa night after night so you won’t be alone or scared. It’s the one who knows to bring the good hospital grapes, stops for crispy diet cokes, chocolate chip cookies, and has your Taco Bell order memorized.

The category is: NOT DEAD YET!!

It’s #NationalCancerSurvivorsDay - which for those of us living with or surviving with the effects of cancer treatment, every day often feels like surviving something big because cancer sucks but it’s nice to have a day where the world recognizes what we go through.

But for today, I’m going to focus on the small joys and to remind myself that “living with cancer is still living” and share my gratitude for still being here when so many of my friends aren’t…

I knew it was coming and someday I’d have to write this but fuck I’m not ready and never will be. Someone once told me friendships were like books. Some people come and go quickly and are like lines or foot notes. Others stay a bit longer and are pages, or even better, are whole chapters. Then there the once in a lifetime friendships - so to you Cass, I say, “bitch, you’re a whole damn novel!” Thank you for being my best friend, keeping my secrets, holding my pain, and always loving me exactly where I was at. Your loss leaves a hole in my heart I don’t think will ever heal. I’ll miss our day long chats, late night snark sessions, and sharing a black humor that made the worst parts of cancer seem bearable. I loved making you laugh. You had a great laugh. You’d just roll your eyes and shake your head and love me even harder. People keep telling me you’re at peace now and no longer hurting, but I find myself angry at the unfairness of it all. You left too early, too few people got to see the magic of you when you let your guard down. I wish things were different. For all of us. It’s just not fair. You promised to haunt me and I’m holding you to that. Fuck Cancer. Cassowary Forever. by @laandkk
