With more than a decade of creative venture experience and a background in engineering, Yosef Woods continues to push interdisciplinary arts forward. Yosef has held the position of head designer for the @vdr.show through the last 4 shows, helping to oversee the creation of hundreds of unique 1-of-1 pieces, and assisting in the development of our vdr designers. by @lab.vdr

The VDRxIDPro team finished semester one of their year long design project with IDpro ( @vt_engineering ). See their finished project at the official VDR show this spring.

“VDR, unlike some of the other projects within IDPro, is not only interdisciplinary between different types of engineering, but different colleges altogether. We expected a disconnect between our expertise and skills, as half the project is concerned with making a garment (art) and half in making a working sensor (technology). Everyone involved, however, was interested in learning as much as we could about the entire process, which led to team bonding through mutual confusion. Since we all understood where we were coming from, it was easier to mesh as a cohesive unit, as no one held any sort of judgement against each other.

The STEM majors learned about design sketching, tech packs, different fabric properties and names, and various techniques used to create certain looks. The more design-centered majors learned about coding, Arduinos, and, in some cases, how to solder and safely integrate electronics into clothing. This cross-disciplinary exposure didn’t just expand our individual skill sets, but it fundamentally changed our workflow.” taken in Virginia Tech by @lab.vdr
