LA makes a lot of noise. We went looking for the sounds you can't hear.

Armed with electromagnetic mics, contact mics and a geophone, we recorded the hidden signals of the city: the radio tower beneath the Hollywood Sign, Santa Monica Pier, Venice Skate Park and even a driverless car.

Electromagnetic hums, vibrating metal and robotic rhythms became synths, atmospheres and sound design.

🎷Ghost Notes is out now on Splice INSTRUMENT.

Built 100% around the sound of the saxophone. Evolving tones and strange textures recorded through tape echoes, pitch-shifted reverbs and a bunch of pedals.

Somehow also became an ode to my first instrument, which I started playing 20 years ago this year(!).

“The 3 synths would fight to be the most prominent signal, creating weird noises, audio breakups, and a TON of distortion.”

Boombox FM started with a dusty boombox, a few radio transmitters and a curiosity about what happens when you do things the other way around. The technical difficulties became the sound.

Karlotta Skagfield grew up under the mysteries of the Northern Lights — and that sense of something vast and unknowable never left her.

When Space Rocks asked her to score their official European Space Agency documentary film, Seas of the Sun: The Story of Cluster, she brought that same elemental instinct to the task. Music that had to carry the weight of science without drowning the humanity of the story.

‘I knew the music had to be impactful — but also that it couldn’t overpower the scene.’
