Our poster paper has arrived, and we’re ready to start printing again! 🖨️🧡

Octavia Lab members receive one free poster print per week. Before submitting, please make sure your image is print-ready and at least 200 DPI, and include your name, library card number, and desired print size in your email.
📧 Send submissions to octavialab@lapl.org in a new email thread.

⚠️ Please note: Poster printing will NOT be available on the following dates due to programming, staffing, or holidays:
9/26, 9/27, 10/4, 10/12, 10/24, 10/25, 11/7 & 11/11.

Located in the Octavia Lab at Central Library, the DIY Memory Lab contains archival grade equipment for digitizing personal archival collections. The DIY Digital Memory Lab can digitize multiple formats of material, including:

Documents
Photos, slides, negatives
Super 8 and 8mm film (picture only, no audio)
Compact audio cassette
CD and DVD
DV and MiniDV (SP)
3.5” inch floppy disks
Minidisc
Reel to reel audio tape
VHS (SP and EP; NTSC)
Vinyl record (LP and 45)

To use the DIY Memory Lab, patrons must have a Los Angeles Public Library card in good standing, attend an an online orientation, read and agree to Octavia Lab policies, sign a release form, and make a reservation. Artist Will Thomas and LA Commons presented the Romare Bearden “The Block” Collage workshop at the Octavia Lab on February 28th for the Inspiring Journeys: African American Histories celebration at the Central Library.
The hands-on collage workshop inspired by the groundbreaking work of artist Romare Bearden, had our lab members work individually to create a vibrant collage of a single building on construction paper, using scrap paper, magazine clippings, and silhouettes. Then they combined some of the completed buildings to construct a large-scale, interconnected “Block.”

The Octavia Lab is a do-it-yourself makerspace located inside of Central Library. Octavia Lab provides library cardholders free and unlimited access to state-of-the-art design, fabrication, preservation, and story-telling technologies.

Whether you need a photo studio and editing tools, podcast equipment, sewing machines and more, Octavia Lab has something for everyone.

Earlier this year, we debuted “Journey to Earthseed” during our celebration of Octavia E. Butler’s life and work. Due to its popularity, we decided to bring it back as its own program!

Attention DTLA 9 to 5-ers! Experience all that the Octavia Lab has to offer on Thursday, Nov 14th at 12pm during the first ever Office Workers Day at the lab.

We knew there was so much more to uncover with our LAPL Library Card, but stepping into this lab space had our team even more impressed. We’re excited to spread the word to show all of these free resources available to you as a LAPL member. Join us on the 14th for a hands-on demo! Sign up in our bio link.
