Layout Builder is one of Drupal’s better ideas; editorial teams get real control over page structure without touching code.

The tradeoff nobody mentions upfront: that control is per-page, and per-page decisions don’t show up anywhere in aggregate.

Two years in, most teams can tell you Layout Builder is in use. Very few can tell you how, which pages have drifted from the content model, which blocks are still doing anything, where the same component got rebuilt for the third time because nobody knew it already existed.

None of this is a Layout Builder flaw. It’s what happens when a flexible tool ships without a way to see what’s been built with it.

The fix isn’t less flexibility; it’s visibility into what the flexibility has produced.

Every year, tens of thousands of security flaws get logged as CVEs, publicly tracked vulnerabilities with a shared ID so any security team, anywhere, can look one up and know exactly what it means. Most sit in reports nobody reads until something breaks.

CVE-2025-53690 is the one that should have every enterprise checking its own defaults. Not because Sitecore’s code was weak, but because a placeholder credential from nearly a decade ago never got rotated, and that’s rarely a one-platform problem.

The uncomfortable part: audits typically test for what’s new, not what’s old and forgotten. A key nobody remembers setting is invisible to most routine reviews.
